First time posting here.

I know the seiko modding community is huge (I took part in it too) but what do you think of modded seiko (or can I say modded Seiko NH35) that resembles famous and known watches?

As a watch collector I’ve met a couple of Seiko modded owners (in this case an AP Royal Oak or a Nautilus) who actually CAN and OWN another type of AP and Patek but wouldn’t want to spend a lot on only a steel watches.

I can see why they’re buying it (because they got nothing to proof or be shamed of being broke) and I considered of buying it too. But the difference is I can barely afford an Omega 😢.

I’ve encountered this segment of watch collecting hobby when my uncle (Who actually own a GMT Master II and a couple of another rolex) gave me a modded Seiko that resembles the Rolex Yacht Master. So buying it myself making it feels like a guilt? Idk I want to hear you guys opinion

I think they're alright, especially for my poor-ass

So long as they don't rebrand it with the lookalikes name I don't mind. Many do great work but I'd never buy a watch that a talented amateur watch tinkerer put together.

Off topic now:

Why do you never see a Honda or Toyota steering wheel in all the watches and steering wheel shots. Do all watch collectors (except me) drive Mercedes,BMW or Audi?

I like the concept of modding your watch. I think there are 2 types of modding. One is to make their watch more individual. And the other is to make it look like another watch.

I’ve seen so many nice modded Seikos that actually look a lot better than the originals. But if you wanna mod your watch to look like another original design, who cares, it’s not illegal right? Or you could just buy a homage, that should cost you less no?

I’ve built a bunch of Seikos. I don’t like to copy well known models. I prefer something mostly original. Or kinda based on something else.

For instance this one was inspired by a Sinn 556.

And this one was inspired by a Rolex OP.
