Clockwise or counter-clockwise?

When setting the time on your watch, should you always go clockwise, or is it okay to go counter-clockwise if it's more convenient? (Photo for illustration only.)

I specifically asked a watchmaker if my vintage pocket watch could be set in either direction and he said yes, so I just spin all my watches to the closer direction. Now on a pendulum clock where you move the hands directly, one is not to turn the minute hand CCW, but I have never heard any such thing about watches. Tag me if I'm mistaken.

I only go clockwise for sanity and my assumption that all the tiny cogs ⚙️are mainly designed to move forward in time.

(A travelers GMT is an exception as you may need to go backwards).

Never seen another owner of an HVD here! This yours?

Great tastes!

For me, I just go clockwise, since it's what the gears are designed for as @sam_kula mentioned, just makes sense in my own head never asked before.

I have zero technical reason for this, but I'll set the time in either direction, however if I happen to go counter clockwise I'll shoot past my target time by a little bit. That way the final adjustment will always be clockwise.

I hybrid that. I always set the time going clockwise. But say when the clocks to back an hour for daylight savings, I'll go back past the hour, then set the final time moving forward a bit...

I don't know why... 😂

Generally either direction, EXCEPT when going past midnight! Some watches are not designed to move past midnight of there is a day date complication. Some are OK with it, and are designed for it, but others are not.

Also, there's a whole thing about not setting the time when the watch is between about 9 pm and 3 am, so as not to stress the mechanism moving dates and days, if present.

Yes, it's mine. Some people may not like the acrylic glass, but I think it suits the vintage look. Also, it has no day/date complication, which I like.

I set my watches clockwise because I like to roll the date over to check if im am or pm
