My watch and feedback

Part I - Crowd funding

In 2019 I got a bit tired of my SKX. I was looking for something similar but updated. When I saw a video review of the soon to be released Hamtun Kraken I was fully on board - this is what I wanted. So for the first time I checked out Kickstarter, having no previous experience with crowd funding. I read the campaign info and some general information on Kickstarter and took the leap of faith to back the campaign. There was a delay of a few months but that was what I expected after reading about how these things go.

In the end I got exactly the watch I wanted for an unbelievably good price. After choosing my options I didn't check the the Kickstarter page again - that's important for part III of this story.

Part II - My watch

The watch is the perfect SKX replacement for me. 41 mm. 125 g. Titanium case and bracelet. Sapphire. A titanium and a ceramic bezel insert. An extra fitted rubber strap. Bright lume. Sellita SW200 running with +4 s/day. All that for 330 quid. 😮

The Kraken got into my heavy rotation, it's incredibly comfortable and I totally appreciate today's trend towards more titanium watches, especially when the steel variant would be a heavy watch. Also being that happy with the watch made me stay in the Kickstarter game, I have backed some more watches since then. It all went well, right?

Part III - Feedback

Much later I made the mistake of posting a picture of the Hamtun on my Instagram. Quickly aggressive comments and even more colourful pm's brought to my attention that not everybody was as happy with my watch as I was. I was totally ignorant of what happened, that lots and lots of people say they never received a watch and that they could never reach the brand owner. I had no idea - for me it was all pain sailing.

Although I had exactly the watch I wanted, after wading through angry comment after angry comment it began to stick - I didn't like my Kraken as much as before and I didn't  wear it for a while, as if it was tainted. Being (electronically) screamed at got to me after a while.

By now I've found my peace with it, the watch re-entered my rotation. I hate that so many people had a really bad experience, still I don't think that I worsen it by wearing my Kraken. This watch was the perfect vibe check when I got on watchcrunch, not a single angry pm on here after posting a picture of it. Seems a much less toxic place than the others..

Can you relate to the story? Have you had a watch you liked for what it is but had tainted by the things you read online?

Tell me about it. I enjoy my Invicta Pro Diver 40mm. I had to know whether, aside from the inflated retail prices and the garish designs, they make good watches. They do and I love it. Didn't think I would but it is a good quality watch that looks great for a ridiculous low price. Even the name etched in the side has grown on me.

I can see how in a failed Kickstarter people will lose their money, and the brand will have a bad vibe after that. But there is really nothing you can do but shrug it off and wear your watch.

i got a similar stort at my country. almost one year back one of the most famous watch youtuber in my country try to built his own microbrand via kickstarter which is mw timepiece. its a decent specs diver with sw200 movement and for me a nice design. he also gave some prototype with a few youtuber just one more watch, time teller, etc to review. after one more year apparently he's failed to deliver the product for unknown reason (probably manufacture problem, delivery problem, or else). last time i checked there isnt much update from their website, and people got so angry about it. i guess there is a risk to take when you participate in some kickstarter product. its great to see you got the product, its a nice watch and great upgrade from skx 🍺

Oh I remember the JOMW review, never wondered how this turned out. I think there's always a lot of risk involved. So far, backing a total of 20ish campaigns I only got one malicious creator who ran the second the funds were in. Rest of the delays were just people in over their head, especially when the campaign went much bigger than anticipated.

Well not sure how it’s your fault they were screwed that’s the sort of thing that makes me want to turn off comments

What up Indonesia! I'm still waiting for my Legato. They said they had to push the international orders back to next year while they fulfilled Indonesian orders this year. Hope they didn't take my money and run, I'm still looking forward to that watch! I mean good lord, what a package for (allegedly) $500!

What shady dealings has he been up to?

so from what i knew beside being a youtuber he also got a shop for selling microbrand watch or preloved watch. apparently some of the deal didnt go well, like some of the watch never came or he failed to pay for the original owner (its the case for preloved watch). i didnt know for myself but i hope the legato diver will come eventhough its late
