I don't remember how old I was but at a young age I was taught that I needed to have a few things on me at all times. My wallet, a pocket knife and a watch. I was too young at the time to have a knife on me so watches became my obsession. Since then I have been fascinated by the art in functional things. Watches, cars, guitars, really any type of machine that serves a purpose.
Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?
I remember first watch was a Casio quartz watch with a white dial and Arabic numerals. It was cheap and plastic but I felt so cool having a "real" watch and not a digital watch like my friends. Was I a watch snob from day one?
Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?
I have a Waltham pocket watch that has been in my family for around 100 years. If I remember correctly, it was gifted to my great grandfather when he graduated from Harvard. At least that's the family story.
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?
DO NOT IMPULSE BUY! I don't have some crazy high dollar collection but I do have many watches that I though "looked cool" and ended up regretting the purchase. I would say do your research. Learning about brands, their history and their designs will help you on your path to find the right watches for you.
Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?
Nivada Grenchen has many designs that really appeal to me. Unfortunately, I have large wrists and have not taken the plunge into the below 40mm arena. I will at some point. Another brand that always has my attention is Islander Watches. I have two Islanders and would like to add more to my collection. Also, I have had a couple interactions with Marc and his team and they are just awesome people.
