Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?
The watch that started this entire journey was my Grandfather's watch.
I had never met him, just heard lots of stories about him as he had died about 7-8 years before I was born.
He was an old military guy having served in the British Navy. Because he was Indian and served for the Government, he had been entered into some kind of 'lottery' to move to the UK. He ended moving on his own in the late 50's leaving behind my Grandma, my dad and his 4 sisters. He wanted to get everything setup there for his big family and he landed in a Loughborough (Part of Leicestershire).
My Grandma and kids would eventually move over some 5-6 years later.
One of the stories was that my Grandfather used to love dressing up like a 'Proper English Gentleman' and visiting local auctions! On one of the auctions he had won an old Glendal manual wind watch!
Everyone associated him with that watch - wound and wore it daily till the day he passed. My Grandma had put it away in a draw and didn't let anyone near it for YEARS.....Till 2010'ish when I had found it in a totally random drawer all heavily worn with the leather strap split down the centre.
I was immediately fascinated by it and had asked my dad about it - he started reminiscing. I decided then and there that I, with my dad's permission, that I get it restored.
And that's how the journey began.....
