Chef Louis x Blancpain x #1WC

“Les poissons, les poissons, hee hee hee, haw haw haw!” Chef Louis is arguably the most famous Disney chef. In Disney’s Little Mermaid animated movie, he is not only Sebastian’s villain, but the two of them have amazing chemistry that not even Batman and Joker can match. Chef Louis is clearly at the top of his culinary game to be cooking at Prince Eric’s castle. Blancpain partners and works together with some of the finest chefs and restaurants in the world. The Michelin Guide even partners with Blancpain in the culinary scene. This is why Chef Louis would be adorning a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe. The steel case is tough enough for the kitchen. Further, the Bathyscaphe can also withstand the rigors and pressure of the deep sea. Since Sebastian often outwits Chef Louis, the aspects of the Bathyscaphe will help satiate Chef Louis’ passion for seafood, whenever he decides to go into the ocean for some "fresh ingredients.”

The Bathyscaphe is certainly one of my favorites. It is underrated, has a level of stealth to it and “the masses” don’t seem to know what it is and brush it off. The sunburst dial is a pleasure to stare into and reflects light beautifully. Every watch’s appearance changes with the strap (that’s why we always change straps, right?), but the Bathyscaphe seems to have such an extreme appearance shift between the emblematic sailcloth and the bracelet. This makes it even more versatile. It’s almost an entirely different watch. It is big, no arguments there. It won’t slide under the cuff, might need to go over it for some. There is always the chance of a door bump or wall bump, but that adds character! In a sea of others, the Bathyscaphe is overdue and is the perfect choice to win #1wc !

For fun, below are some previously taken pictures prior to the 1WC challenge to show the sailcloth and bracelet visual differences.

Great watch -- I'm not sure that I would classify Chef Louis as a villain though -- he's just a guy trying to make/eat dinner!

Not with that mustache he isn't. That is a villain mustache if ever there was one.

Curious design choices going on with that Fifty Fathoms. The indices are comically small. The bezel is retro small. The date at 4:30 tells you this is no longer a real dive watch. The handset is on the small side and the second hand must be impossible to see in low light. It is one of those iconic watches that is "just not for me."

Another great one from #1wc! As a former chef this is perfect, and the cuffs on a chef coat could certainly contain that Watch! He’d be just fine wearing that scrubbing pots out or butchering up an unlucky crab.
