5 things I learned this year as a watch collector:

  1. You can’t compete with people who have more money than you but you can compete with your own imagination

  2. You can’t judge a person by their watch (but I still do)

  3. We are entering the final chapter of traditional watch making

  4. It’s just man jewelry, don’t take it too seriously

  5. All watches will become vntage some day

Cheers everyone, here’s to another year 🍻

Don't take it too seriously. Just enough to go insane but not enough to care one way or the other.

Great points

I agree with all but 1. I've seen those with money put up their collection that has the unsurprising batch of hype watches, AP, Rolex, etc. I've also seen collections of those who followed their heart, and you can tell because they have Farers, AnOrdains, limited Seikos w/ colorful textured dials and even mods with custom cases and dials. Your number three is right because microbands and custom shops are catching up to to the "big boys"

All are true. The fact many get so insecure about other collections is a bit sad. We need to be our own barometer.

It’s not a competition. Buy what you like and not to impress or as an investment.

I learned a lesson a very long time ago: I was discussing arrangements for my mom’s interment with the director impeccably tailored in a black Brioni suit, hand made Italian dress shoes that cost more than I earned in a month working as a grunt architect, his black Mercedes was carelessly parked nearby. I noticed he was wearing a platinum AP Perpetual calendar moonphase Royal Oak circa middle 90s that might have retailed for over 60k cad back then. Time is finite, live life to its fullest, stuff is just stuff at the end. My mom’s services were handled by the man’s daughter just a few days after our meeting since he passed suddenly tragically in his sleep before honouring our contract.
