Hands on with Grand Seiko SLGW003
I've wanted a watch with dual impulse escapement, the innovation GS should talk more about, but they all have date at 3, which I don't want, especially with dressier pieces. And they are a little too thick too.
I was hoping GS introduces manual wound, dual impulse movement, with no date. So I was very happy to see it launched at W&W.
Yesterday, inbetween business meetings, I had 10 minutes to spare so I went into GS flagship boutique in Ginza to see if the watches are on display. They were and they allowed me to try it on.
This is a beautiful watch both front and back. Will I buy it? Probably not. I like textured dials they make but not so sure on this model. I mean I like this horizontal birch texture but I would probably like it more with more plain dial.
I will go and see it agian when I have more time to spend with it.
I also had a quick look at SBGC275, the sport model with flashy red dial. It's not my taste at all but I was astonished with how the colour changes depending on the angle. If you like the design and colour, you should see it in metal.

Pretty cool that you were able to see it and try it on in person. Was looking to add the White Birch Hi-Beat to the collection next, but this new Birch Bark has me reconsidering.

I’ve seen white birch high beat before, whose dial texture is more 3 dimensional and prominent. Birch bark is very much understated compared to white birch high beat with less prominent dial and smaller size.
In case you haven’t seen it in person, white birch spring drive has different dial texture from white birch high beat, more reserved look I would say.
So you should see and compare the trio in person to determine what’s best for you.
I feel GS launches new dials too often and offers too many options, which makes it difficult to choose one. That’s why I haven’t been able to pull a trigger on any😂
