Automatic watch care question

does not wearing your automatic watches hurt the mechanics of the watch? Not sur e how to ask but what’s the normal practice, watch winders keep your watch moving… is that healthy for the watch? Does ”resting” it harm it at startup or cause potential problems? is there a best way to avoid issues?

thanks

On the contrary - wearing your watch wears it down. Little by little, but it does, and so does a winder. Modern watches use synthetic oil that doesn't gunk up, like the natural oils of old, when not running. Watch winders only make sense for really complicated calendar complications that are complicated to adjust once the watch has stopped.

There was a thread on this a day or two ago. General consensus is to wind things up around once a month just to stir the lube around. Otherwise dormancy is a-ok unless, as mentioned above, it's some pricey complicated bitch that is a royal pain (and/or damage risk) to set often.

Anything that moves will wear down, lubricants stop most of the wear but even they over time will break down at a molecular level and become less effective. That's one of the reasons for service, besides case seals its the lube that needs replacing. As long as you store your watches out of direct sunlight and reasonably cool they will be fine.
