Galaxy Gold (Korean watch company)

Galaxy is an offshoot brand of Orient Korea, which broke ties with the original Orient of Japan back in the 80s. It is also not affiliated with Samsung. Orient Korea pushed hard to produce an all-Korean watch since then, but alas it did not work out and there still currently are no 100% Korea-manufactured watches in production to this day (AFAIK. Do the Samsung Galaxy watches count as in-house?)

Galaxy enjoyed good sales back in the 90s as an affordable dress watch/wedding gift option, and it is still in business today. It's gold plated and it has a quartz movement, but it gets the job done very well.

Ooo, I remember Galaxy watches but didn’t know about the connection to Orient. Then again, back then I didn’t care about watches other than I needed one to tell time. I can’t even tell you what brand I wore back then.

Reflecting on it a bit more, just about everyone must have worn a watch before cell phones became popular.  Blows my mind that it was so ubiquitous  but watches just didn’t register to me at the time. Now, when I look at someone, I always notice what watch they’re wearing…

Thanks for posting - that's all new to me.  Seiko was my favourite brand for many years, can't count how many Seikos and Orients I've owned.  But I have never heard of Orient Korea or Galaxy.  Great stuff.

Haha, funnily enough my father hated wearing watches for most of his career (until recently, he picked himself up an IWC), he just looked at the time on the clocks.

Anyway yes! Almost like a third cousin removed situation going on but Galaxy and Orient are connected. Such a shame the company was not able to make an in-house movement (quartz or otherwise) in the end.

I think you might owe Mr. Stuart Diamond an apology!🤣

To be fair, I doubt many people even in Korea (under the age of 30 at least) know of the brand. Which brand is your favourite now?

Don't know if I have a favourite brand any more.  I'm not as excited about watches as I was years ago.  I love a lot of G-Schocks and I think Citizen make some amazing watches.

And you?

For me it's Cartier, just something about their design that gets me excited everytime. Though, full disclosure, I don't have too experience with them in steel.
