Running/Sports Watch

Hi Crunchers,

Hoping for some inspiration from the crowd ๐Ÿ˜‰ I'm looking for a watch to tell the time when I'm doing sports. I posted something similar a while ago, but I have been able to refine my requirements a bit.

What I'm looking for:

  • an analogue watch, no digitals

  • quartz, preferably solar

  • case size: 36mm to 40mm

  • lug to lug: <47mm

  • case material: durable and light

  • manufacturer: don't care

  • price: <500โ‚ฌ

  • complications: timing bezel, others: don't care

I don't need any fancy gimmicks, I'm really just looking for a wearable and highly legible watch to tell the time.

Looking forward to your ideas!

Can you compromise on the timing bezel thing? I mean really you will stillI have to look at the watch twice at the beginning and end of your run, LOL. I ask because I had a similar ask recently - not for running, but for gym, swimming, ping pong (dont believe anybody who tells you thats not a "real sport") daily beater kinda stuff. Crunchers came forth and gave some great suggestions. I shortlisted RZE Valor, Boldr Venture, Bertucci A2T, but I have decided to go for the UK edition of the Citizen Promaster Tough Titanium (popularly called the Ray Myers watch). 40mm, Lightweight, 300m WR, anti shock (important for sports) , antimagnetic, ecodrive. 300GBP plus change. Apparently the thing was issued to some miltaries, and is kinda indestructible... well as indestructible as watches get. Trouble right now is that the black dial on kevlar strap which I like is out of stock, so waiting. If procuring from the UK is a problem, then there's a US version with 200m WR. Its not a looker by any means, but feels like its gonna beat a lot of beaters out there.

Looks pretty cool, can definitely compromise on the timing bezels, that would be an extra. Do you have a ref no for the model? I think citizen would be ideal for the use case ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

EO2028-06L 3.5mm. Haven't checked L2L but can't imagine it'll be an issue.

Yeah, have had this in my shopping cart a few times, but need to see it in real life. You have any experience with it?

Vero is a American microbrand and makes watches for โ€œexploresโ€

Not with that Citizen model, but I do with the Citizen NY0040 (automatic in continuous production since the 90s) and BN-0151 (larger eco drive diver).

Both have a similar undercut case design on the wrist side for comfort. They've been bombproof for day hikes and watersports for me though I use a Casio Pro-Trek on multi-day hikes in the back country - I like the convenient compass on my wrist and the barometric sensor for changing weather conditions.

Plus a Garmin handheld GPS. And a Silva sighting compass. And a PLB for emergencies. Yes, I was a scout.

That feature, and the accompanying alarm you can set to warn of incoming weather, or maybe incoming cold water to the face in a canyon, is why I prefer the Protrek.

Also weirdly enough why the Protrek is issued over the G Shock for some jobs.

Haha nice, here's me trying to minimize my equipment... But I guess the use case is quite different, no chance of getting lost in the city forest I go running in ๐Ÿ˜‚
