Well, you have German watchmakers and then there's Lange. In my opinion, Lange has already surpassed Patek in terms of finishing and aesthetics.

It's impossible to choose between the two. That depends on what brands you pair up.

I see no point in making a comparison between one country and another, since each has a wide variety of watch makers creating at all different horological levels. If you want to compare two brands, that’s fine. What’s the endgame: German > Swiss? Swiss > German? Either one is a complete oversimplification.

I’m from Germany - so no objective opinion possible :P

Well, Lange & Söhne offers a brief 3-year course in Watchmaking as part of the German apprenticeship system. I think somebody on Watchcrunch should volunteer and report back. 😉

Have you tried the more "affordable" (not sure even if that's the right word 🤔 cause they are also expensive) Glasshutte Original? It's like probably Tudor to Rolex just not owned by same company. But their design language typical German style. Personally I like it better than Swiss. But that's because my life style... I like something different... Even if they are weird to others.

Germany's oldest watch maker is Kienzle. What in Switzerland compares to Kienzle? (Trick question, I know, but...)

In any case, it is not just about watchmaking as the act of 'finishing'; it is also about movement design, accuracy and much more. Within the 'total package' of a watch, German watches and Swiss watches are totally different products that in my view cannot even be compared to one another.

Yes, it has been a public secret for years that the finishing of Lange is generally superlative to everyone else....However, more importantly German watchmaking in general shows little interest in ultra flat, elegant movements (like the Swiss do) and they prefer to build on the side of stability even at the cost of total moveemnt height. This results in higher accuracy. You either appreciate that or you don't.

I own both Lange and Patek, and clear for me is that my Lange's keep impeccable time, a few seconds a week, better than any superlative chronometer by far. My Patek is less accurate, but somewhat more interesting to look at, as well as beautiful and comfortable to wear.

In reality there is no such thing as better, only different, especially when you are comparing high level brands next to one another. And that gets even more complicated when you add independent makers to the mix ☺️

But, if they make better watches than they make better chocolate, and are nicer to their children, and are less obnoxious when they vacation in Ibiza. This isn't an over-simplification, this is a foundational question like over or under:

Nice you still use toilet roll? I'm using garden hose here down under 🚽🍻🤣

It’s like comparing apples and oranges.  All depends what your tastes are and what your looking for in a watch. I’m not going to say one is better than the other, that’s totally subjective. I own both German and Swiss, also Japanese watches, so are German watches better than Japanese watches, again impossible to answer. I love my Seiko’s and my Citizens just as much as my collection of Sinn watches.
