Help! Let’s identify this watch!

My grandmother died shortly before her 103rd birthday. When she was no longer able to live alone (at age 101!), my dad cleaned out her house. This is going somewhere watch related, I promise!

All of the children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great,great-children got to pick out keepsakes.

My oldest son picked out my grandfather’s Navy uniform, and a watch that was beat up beyond recognition. (Told you we were getting to watch content!).

So this evening, I decided to dig through his stuff to find it. My son is active duty Air Force and has lived all over the world, so I had to go through totes. And, I found it! The watch head and bracelet are mismatched. A Hafis watch head and Hamilton bracelet.

Now for the coolest part of the story. I couldn’t read the brand, because the hands were stuck over the printing. The crown had gotten knocked off at some point, so I got the idea to use my bracelet screwdriver to see if I could turn the hands so I could read it… no luck. But as a turned the screwdriver, THE WATCH SPRUNG TO LIFE! The second hand started beating and then 60 seconds at a time, the minute hand moved and minute by minute the hour hand adjusted!

Friends, my grandfather died in 1970. I think it’s fair to say that this watch hasn’t kept time for 53 years. What a testament to our hobby and the amazing little machines that we wear on our wrists.Sometimes I think we take for granted how amazing they are!

Thanks for sticking with me through this long, story-time post and please help me identify the watch and perhaps, how to repair it!

Lovely story but a sad loss, but what a watch! It’s seen lots of life and been in lots of adventures and it still works fantastic!
