Got myself a 30th birthday gift this year. A brand I never thought I would buy because since I was young, my dad kept telling me Cartier is a fashion watch and not a watchmaking brand. He doesn’t know I bought this 😅. Doing my own research, I don’t agree with his point of view.
But when I saw this watch and did some research and found out that it’s technically the first men’s wrist watch, I couldn’t help but fall in love with it.
Especially with it’s minimal, timeless and elegant design. It’s thin profile also drew me in as I only have sport watches or thick watches in my collection. I also am a sucker for beautiful Roman numerals.
Was worried that this XL was too big for my tiny wrists but I really wanted the bonding moment of winding the watch and can’t justify spending that amount of money for a quartz model. Hope I don’t regret getting this size for the mechanical movement.
Also got this because a lot has changed (in somewhat a good way) this year around me, myself included. Just wanted to commemorate it with this.

Excellent choice, it is a beautiful watch
Cartier is an incredible watch brand. Some of the most iconic pieces in horology are Cartier.
In the end, aren’t watches “fashion” and “jewelry”. No one nowadays “needs” a watch.
The santos you have is excellent. Will go anywhere and everywhere.
Cartier used to source its movements from specialists, such as Patek, Audemars, and Rolex. But then they bought a manufacturing facility (Ebel) in 2000, and by 2002, they were producing their own, in-house movements.
Thus, Cartier was NEVER a fashion watch, in that sense. Cartier has always been high horology. When Cartier became a true watchmaker, they didn't cut any corners, and their in-house movements can easily compare / compete with any other luxury Swiss brand movement out there.
