My first encounter with Casio watches was in the early 1980’s. I was strolling around the sports goods retail district of Ochanomizu, Tokyo. I bumped into a street vendor selling “cheap watches”. A DW5000, I think, was hung on one of the stall pillars. The 200m water resistant spec was “surprising” and was cheap enough even for a student to make a quick purchase. I was a member of the university’s official scuba diving club/team then and thought that it would at least be some “fun” to wear it among the dominant Seiko analog divers. However, after a day of diving, one of my sempais (seniors) pointed out during the wrap up meeting that I should not wear such a watch for diving use, because of its basic unreliability and the use of an unreliable stop watch function as a dive time indicator (what if the stop watch was stopped unintentionally?). So I went back to my Seiko tuna-can, which I still own. My first Casio was stashed in a drawer and was eventually lost after a series of relocations, which I regret now. After graduation, along with my mechanical watch collecting, I was able to stock up these 16 Casios, including Frogmans, G-Shocks etc., but still wish I had kept that DW5000, I think, that I acquired from a street vendor.

What would your sempais say about the Apple Watch Ultra’s capabilities?

I met my sempai recently at a reunion party. He was wearing an Apple Watch!! No, I couldn’t ask him about his thoughts about the Ultra. I should have posted two weeks ago, so as to get your comment.🤨

I dived with worse watches in the 80's.

In the 80’s, Seiko was the de facto standard diver watch brand in Japan. (Almost) Everybody wore a Seiko in the university diver league, the Japan maritime self defense force/the Japan Coast Guard diving squads etc.. Non Seiko diver watches were a rare sight then. We sometimes saw “shop-divers” wearing Rolex Submariners.

Nice box! GShock is my go-to watch for the unknown... camping, hiking, off-road, swim meets lol. I don't worry about them and evertime I need to rely on them, they are ready. Great collection buddy!

Thanks for your comment. Yes, the G-Shocks are definitely go-to watches. My main dog-walk watches are my Frogmen.
