Seiko 5 from eBay for 35$ CAD

Had been browsing the pdf catalogs of Seiko and ended up looking on eBay. Couldn’t find this model, but at the price thought “why not”. Assumed frankenwatch. Arrived functional, added this strap (amazon) and was happy to see a Seiko movement inside. The 7009A has a push movement for day, and if it winds that’s not functioning here. Love the dial surface, which has a checkered pattern with brushing. This has been a fun, cheap watch adventure. Could use a new set of hands perhaps!

Thanks for the comment - can you help me understand it? I was expecting a non-Seiko movement. With a Seiko movement inside, the watch is vibtage with aftermarket (in a way). Would the difference between this and one of the Seiko mod people who charge $400 is… some mix of:

Country of origin? (Cost of labour and esteem)

Quality of workmanship?

Taste?

Old Seiko movements lack the hand winding option in general, can't say how much of the movement is actually original though.

Now the difference between this and a modern Seiko frankewatch is quality for sure.

This one has a plated alloy case, plain old glass, poor quality dial and hands and just looks really poor overall.

Modern "seiko mod" has much higher quality parts.

Steel or titanium cases, sapphire crystal, higher quality dial, hands, lume and finishing. Completely new movements instead of old used ones.

So just the price difference in putting one together is huge so it's no surprise that people are charging 300-400$ when they spend 200$ to start with.
