On the wrist comparison: JLC vs Longines

Recently I had a chance to try on a Polaris. I was interested because they hover near Rolex for the submariner, and represent a “High Horology” brand. As a newcomer, exploring the spectrum from entry to higher level watches, and in real life where possible, is where I am coming from. That in the metal experience does show me the difference between a Farer, a watch at ~1K and the next level up with Longines at around 4K. Building on that I was excited to see a JLC store at a recent conference to see a Polaris in person. It doesn’t disappoint BUT, though there is a significant discernible difference between a Farer and Longines/JLC, there is very little difference between Longines and JLC. The gap is narrower, and at times, like the inner bezel feel, is indistinguishable between these two watches. The JLC has more lustre in that dial, and applied markers. These don’t quite bear out the price difference. I wonder about IWC compared to Sinn, and how some of the Rolex tool watches feel in person compared to sub 4000 dollar equivalents. Has anyone had this experience?

Welcome to the point of diminishing returns. It’s very real, especially in the watch world.

That’s the term exactly.

Just a thought, maybe you need to compare not only outside look, but also what's inside?

Valid point. A lot of the difference in the really high end stuff is in the movement finishing.

That was my point (including expenses to create a movement) if talking about the difference in prices.

Exactly. Does the JLC cost more to manufacture and thus is probably 4x more expensive for you to buy? Absolutely. Does that equate to happiness when it’s on your wrist? That is for you to decide.

I remember wanting to love the 38mm Bathyscaphe. I tried on the 36mm legend diver the same day and I like the LD more.

JLC used to be a bit of a bargain, but since the prices have gone up it’s hard to justify now.
