Q: How did you get into watch collecting?

I’ve always worn a watch since as far back as I can remember. But I think it was my Invicta that got me hooked to collecting.

Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?

Titan double register day date in a black dial.

Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?

As a child one of my most prominent memories of my grandfather was him winding his watch every morning before wearing it and heading for his morning walk. He passed away 15 years ago. About 5 years ago, I was looking for that particular watch for purely sentimental reasons, but to my dismay no one in my extended family knows where it went. I was told it was a Favre Leuba in Sterling Silver, but I’ve not been able to locate a similar one online so I’m afraid I will never be able to verify that. Anyway I decided to purchase a manual wind watch as a gift for my father in my grandfather’s memory. It is a humble HMT Kohinoor with a deep maroon dial and Devanagari (Hindi) numerals. My father wore that watch until late last year, when I gave him an upgrade (another manual winding) and kept his HMT for myself. This maroon one has scratches on the case and crystal made by my father, which I never intend to polish or replace. I wear it occasionally on a steel mesh bracelet with pride! Incidentally, wearing this small-ish case has also piqued my curiosity for vintage watches.

Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?

Don’t buy the hype. Or do. It is your money, only you can choose how to spend it 😉

Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?

Vintage brands like GUB Glashutte, Gruen, Lemania etc. have been fascinating me.

Q: What is your grail watch and why?

My grail watch is a Rolex datejust 36 with roman numerals, fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet - in any metal. I find it the most elegant, noticeable yet understated wristwatch. It’s not just a grail for me, but also my exit watch.
