When you think you know your friend
Funny how individual watch tastes and preferences are.
When I decided to go sit on a white sandy beach in Cancun for 2 weeks, I was stumped about what to do with my pup. I mean she would have loved the beach, but the resort wasn't excited about that. My best friend stepped up and played dog sitter. As a thank you I decided I was going to build him a watch. I thought I was so smart. How could I go wrong? I've known him 35 years, so I would take everything I know about his personality and create the perfect unique build and surprise him. I've posted about it before, so I won't bore you again. But this is the final product
Bad news. He didn't care for it. He's apparently not a fan of fume dials and thought the bracelet didn't suit him. And here I thought I knew my friend.
Good news. I freaking love this watch! And I'm stoked I get to keep it.
Turns out he was interested in a solid black dial, possibly with some texture. He said a black bracelet might be cool. Maybe a more classic look. Simple.
Possibly?! Might?! Maybe?! Ugh... Thanks for being so specific. But now I was determined. He was getting a freaking watch and he was going to love it. That's it and that's all.
Scrolling through AliX trying to match his request I decided to make 2 watches. He could choose the one he likes best and I could see if I could sell the other. That's a thing right? People sometimes sell watches? I mean my house seems like a Watch Hotel California, but I think I've heard of it being done.
The parts came yesterday, so I got after it this morning.
Watch #1
Black case and bracelet. Black dial, with a little texture. Damn, I know his favorite color is black but this feels like a little much. Simple, classy, but Idk about classic.

So I requested a sterile dial. I was told I would get a sterile dial. I was sent a photo confirming a sterile dial. As you can see I didn't get a sterile dial. But since returning it to China didn't strike me as a reasonable alternative, I just ran with it.
Black dial, with a little texture. But this time a stainless case and bracelet. Still pretty simple, classy but idk about classic.
What do you think? Any guesses on which one he'll choose?
Update: I just keep being wrong lol. I totally thought he would choose the SS with the birch dial. But he really liked the black one. At least he liked one. Now do I keep the Birch or try to sell it? 😜

Have you noticed on some Aliexpress cases esp. the 36mm have longer lugs?! Btw also a nice black leather strap on the black birch would look super classy too!! 👌

I have noticed. At first I didn't like it. I felt like unless you have fitted endlinks it would look goofy. But it's looks fine and the extra lug length adds a little "wrist presence" that keeps the 36 from looking small.

I am showing him both and letting him choose. We're meeting up to go out and chase women of questionable moral standards tonight. He's going to check them out and decide then.

My Mrs prefers the Khaki King Auto she nicked from me over the expensive Cartier I got her..
My Dad received an Aqua Terra quartz from me a couple of years ago, wore it for a month then decided it was "too nice" for him & wanted to sell it....I bought it back .
My best mate had another Khaki King,this time a quartz, it lasted 2 years then died (I gave him a Alpinist reissue as a replacement)
A workmate got a Turtle from me, wore it a handful of times then bought himself a Citizen solar.....
I could go on...🤣
