So my son turns 18 at the end of the summer. He's not the material sort, and cares little for brands in general, but appreciates something that is well made / engineered.
After a lot of thought, he has agreed we can buy him a Swiss watch for his 18th Birthday. He wears a Casio digital watch to school and knows little about watches in general.
I showed him 7 categories of watches from my collection:
Dress - Orient Bambino 38mm gold
Explorer/GADA - Rolex Explorer 214270
GMT - Christopher Ward C63 GMT
Dive - Omega SMP300
Field - Hamilton Khaki field
Driver - Oris Chronoris
Chrono - Omega Speedmaster Sapphire Sandwich
I asked him - don't worry about the brand, colour or bracelet - which category apeals to you the most.
It took him about a minute to look at them all, and he said "A Dive Watch please Daddy, on a bracelet like yours."
I just said "Good Choice" and walked away with a tear in my eye. I just wonder if the fondness for dive watches is encoded in my DNA (and his).

You've opened a very expensive can of worms 😂👍🏻👍🏻
A tear in your eye…from passing on the Watch addiction gene 🤣
Awww that's a heartwarming story!
Tear in the eye for sure and pain in the wallet ! But only 18 once, I understand !

Well, my dad got me my first Casios, but the day I turned 18 my parents were like
YYOOOOUUUHHAA DUDE YOU ARE SO ON YOUR OWN NOW MAN, WUAHAHAHAHAH
I will treasure the memory of our older daughter announcing that she had accepted a risky more challenging opportunity in her profession( this was a kid who didn’t get called back for a job with Starbucks), but true to form she was going to Africa first to hook with a few buddies from hs before growing up. The pandemic was no biggie. She accepted my fully serviced Breitling Chronomat which she rocks no problems promised her mom that she would return safely with dad’s watch. It would be a lot time before we met again but that watch is our connection until she is allowed to pick whatever she wishes from my stash. Watches are nothing without the proper owner.
so cool!!
“Son, can I borrow your watch?” 😁
What a fantastic 18th birthday gift. Still treasure my father’s watch which I recently managed to repair! ✨🎊✨
