"Keeper": the real villian

I've learned some things from this website.

The terms "tool watch", "men's size", and "strapmonster" are apparently cringe. Saying "cringe" is also cringe.

Well I'm here to tell you that "keeper" is the real villian.

There's no such thing.

The only keepers are the ones that I'm too lazy to list because the hassle of finding anyone dumb enough to buy it isn't worth the squeeze.

What's the point of saying it? To convince myself that I made a sound financial decision spending my hard-earned cash on over priced garbage? Yes.

This insidious word... keeper; it's a lie I tell myself to front that I have everything under control.

If you disagree, it's only a matter of time until you realize I was right.

Seeing as how practically everything we do is just to shelter our psyches from the horror of our own ultimate non-existence, it doesn't seem like such a sin to use one little word if it lets us enjoy that feeling of control for a fleeting moment.

It's only bad if you have too many watches. Haha

A "noble lie" if you will.

I started reading this thinking you meant the little loop that holds the tail of the strap down.

I don’t trust when people say, “I just bought this watch! It’s a keeper!”

But I trust them when they say, “Why on earth did I sell it?! It was a keeper.”🤣

And I bet you regretted making that mistake the second you went down this disaster😈😈😈

I say a watch is a keeper to protect my heart from everyone planning on informing me I just purchased a piece of shit. 🤣

This post is a keeper LOL 😂

This thread is a keeper . . . .😆

Stop knocking our "buzz" words. Without them we're just collectors and not cool Horologists. How else can we sound cool to the kids?

"Without further ado, my Grail Toolwatch is a keeper due to its horological heritage "

Interesting. I usually enjoy being the "Language Police", but this one has not seemed to have rankled me.

I think that is because I usually find the term used ironically or semi-ironically. Much like at an elderly couples' 60th wedding anniversary you might joke that "I guess Mildred is a keeper" to the wizened groom. I see "keeper" used for sentimental watches, grandpa's watch or the Tag that you bought with your first bonus in 1993.

Perhaps it is used without irony with collectors who churn their collections and sell watches with the frequency of addicts disposing of worldly possessions at pawn shops. I guess if someone told me that a newly purchased watch was "a keeper" I might think, "Ah, you summer child..."

I’ve never sold a watch in my life. But I do have a couple of watches that are special to me and meaningful enough that I would never consider selling them. “Keepers” if you will. Not sure why that’s cringe 😁😉

It's not. Everything I do on social media is just me shamelessly poking fun at either myself or things that others take too seriously (i.e. the use of certain terms to describe a general point of view)

The one I dislike the most is “punches well above its weight” 😉
