Seiko 6139 Purchase Questions

So I am a new watch enthusiast and have found the perfect watch for me, the 6139. Looking online, I see many going for either $1,000 or another group of them at $500. While I don't quite have the funds for the former group, I was wondering if it can be more beneficial to get the cheaper and just get it fixed. What are your thoughts?

I know there can be some very sketchy listings for this watch in particular, so I don't want to get over my head.

Wow you found a decent Pogue for $500??!  For a very popular piece, I tend to worry how legitimate the piece can be so I will do more research on the seller and make sure you are getting a 6139…

also there‘s no perfect watch lol… 😉 the more you research the more you get interested and all of a sudden boom! You have 60 watches !! Sorry I’m talking about myself…you might be different …you might be better… but Pogue is a very nice watch and the story it tells… good luck

Haha thanks for the input. I have been looking more for the Bruce Lee specifically. I like the black dial. The blue dial is nice though too. ha

Dude that’s even worst! 😂

Well that's a shame. Thanks for the input. I guess I was born a couple decades too late.

I think it’s still doable, just have to be patient and the right watch and right vendor will come along keep searching!! The fun is the “Hunt!” my friend!! 😁

I have an 6139 I have been tossing around the idea of selling.  It is functioning properly but could use a service.

It looks great. Nice picture too. Hello from Kennesaw.

If I were shopping for a 6139, I’d try to buy from https://www.dcvintagewatches.com/

Keep saving, you’ll thank yourself later for spending a little more up front knowing you got the real deal.

·

Haha. Thanks for the resources.

All I can say

There's a lot of Frankin Seiko's out there claiming to be genuine and all original. You need to know how to spot them, which takes some time to learn. But it's not all doom and gloom, they can be found if you look in the right places.

Buy the seller and not the watch buddy 👍

Is it overall bad if the watch isn't all original, or is the warning more of a "make sure you pay the right amount" if it isn't all original? I am fine with new parts especially since it has been 40 years. I just want to pay what is appropriate.

If they have used aftermarket parts then the price should reflect that, so a lower price should be the norm. Collectors want the ones that haven't been touched and are all genuine, so they fetch higher prices. If they have used aftermarket parts, then you have to question if they have done the same with the movement, which opens another can of worms. Whereas the all genuine, may not appear all shinny and look's older an in need of a bit of TLC will be the one every collector will be looking for.

I hope this all makes sense and helps somewhat in your search. I've been doing this for 20 odd years now and I still have to research the watch and especially the seller before I make a commitment to buy a watch.

Yup. I was burned by a Franken-6309-7040with a dodgy crown-lock and fake dial. Awful. That was my first, only and last foray into vintage. 😭

I love the design of the 6139, particularly the pouge with rotating bezel, but I am hesitant as I would want to use it as a daily tool for flying. Any thoughts on using a watch that old to actually work vs say a modern 7750 powered chronograph?
