What are the limits of a watch before it becomes smart?

I recently added the Casio G-Shock GBX-100 to my collection and it's Bluetooth abilities are simply awesome! Many people try to escape from social media but I have a problem not answering my phone and this watch helps me.

However, this watch is more of a pager than anything. I would not like to respond to anyone with it and fortunately, I can't.

But how smart can a watch be without becoming a smart watch? I think what this watch can do is enough for me but not for others. Please let me know your opinions!

Forest Gump’s mama might say… smart is as smart does 😉.

I think some people use less functionality in their Apple Watch than others use on an 80’s vintage Casio digital.

Not sure but I got the GBD for me and my wife and they’ve been great. I turned off notifications for both of us so maybe we don’t need all those capabilities after all.

I ve got one of these, too. Me thinks this one is more like a hybrid than a real smartwatch- too much features missing on the GShock to be a smartwatch. I don t really use the bluetooth- connectivity to be honest. I ve never thought about getting a real smartwatch, and never will

The way my brain categorizes them is like this:

A regular watch may have sensors or logs or functions that require computation to run, but it is its own unit with a determined set of functions.

A smart watch/wrist computer is a platform that can make use of all the regular watch sensors, logs, and functions as a computer, with the connectivity, room, and flexibility capable of downloading more software/updates, making changes, etc.

A regular watch is built to be a watch and nothing but that specific watch, and a smart watch is a computer with a screen that can be told to do anything, including tell the time. Take the former off your wrist, and it's a clock. Take the latter off your wrist, and it's a computer.

Is this a smart watch? I say not because no apps, though it does have wireless connectivity (infrared) to download data.

Still a fun watch, plus it was NASA certified.
