Thoughts on Rolex Deepsea 116660? (About to buy)

Found a reference 116660 “James Cameron“ Deepsea at a local jeweler.  Excellent/pristine condition and able to get it for $16,500 - which appears in-line with pricing online (except here I get to inspect Etc.).

Love the watch and as a bigger guy it’s really the only Rolex that works on me.  put down a deposit and going to pick it up today (UNLESS) someone here convinces me it’s a mistake (model, price, Watch itself).

anyone have strong feelings on buying this reference used?

thanks in advance!

With Rolex prices dropping, and the trend turning towards smaller watches, you're in a better position to negotiate, IMO

I've been wanting one of these for a few months. It's my favorite model for sure. I'd buy

This. And since they're not as hot as the Sub, I'd try to negotiate for sure (that's the market, not saying at all that it's a lesser watch, it isn't). Unless you are financially apathetic and don't care if it's worth $11k this time next year (who really knows though), that's a decision only you can make. But it's a killer watch, nothing wrong with it and seeing in person eliminates some risk, for sure.

Prices have dropped and I feel comfortable that the price is consistent with what I'm seeing online; with the added benefit of being able to try before I buy. If the price is down to $11k next year that will sting "emotionally", but I'm not buying to flip for a profit, so if today's price is fair with market, I can live with fluctuations until many years from now if I decide to sell.  Headed to the store now!

I love everything about the watch but the size (specially the thickness). If you are ok with the size, moreover, you actually like it, I´d definitely pull the trigger. I know you know, but here are a few reasons why you should buy it:

  1.  Killer dial. Very uncommon for Rolex
  2. Date without the cyclops. It messes the whole balance.
  3. Love the green "DEEPSEA" text. It gives the watch the necessary color tweak, to move it from boring monochrome to kick-ass colorful dial... not boring as the rest of the black subs you see out there. Dont take me wrong, I have 2 no-date subs, for me is the perfect watch... so perfect that it makes it a bit boring.
  4. You wont see "every other watch" wearing it.
  5.  It looks awesome!

I just love the watch, I´d love they made it on a smaller size (although I´m quite a big fellow)

Enjoy and wear it in good health

Note: I know I did not help at all hahaha

Enjoy and wear it in good health!  I have one and I feel it's top heavy from the 20mm to the 16mm taper at the clasp.  Therefore, it's locked up in the bank vault with my other high end pieces.  Congratulations 🎉👊🏽

There has got to be an algorithm at work here. I was just feeling like the James Cameron was to be my next fixation when boom, here you are. Wear it in health my friend!

Congrats! I wish I had the wrist size to get this.

Thanks all for the input.  Guess now I know not to come to a bunch of watch nerds to be talked out of an expensive purchase 😄

FWIW here is the WatchChart for the James Cameron Deep Sea. I personally think its value will remain steady and continue to increase over time, especially if it ever becomes discontinued as the rumor has gone for a couple of years. If you're getting a pristine condition example with a full set I think you're buying well.
