What are your thoughts on the Ginault Ocean Rover II?

Why doesn't Teddy ever talk about this watch? Maybe it's because he doesn't sell these on his website?

I have done extensive research on Ginault. I have also emailed John at Ginault. He sent me a specification PDF on the movement, clarified any questions I had, and even helped me customize my build.

I don't understand why everyone is caught up in the controversy on this company. In my opinion, they are an incredible company offering fine watchmaking at a bargain.

Does the watch community actually have negative thoughts about this company?

The lead times on Rolex? Unknown...

The lead times for Ginault? 8-12 weeks.

Do you think it's worth waiting for?

It's gorgeous, I would have one in a heartbeat

I have a Ginault Silent Service. It is a fantastic watch. The customer service has been as good as any watch company I have dealt with.

·

Also have a Silent Service and it’s great. I don’t care about the controversy, just that it’s got luxury finishing at an awesome price. Got great customer service as well.

I wish they would make this one in 41-42. I’ve never tried one on and typically a 40 is a little too small for me. I don’t like ordering something I’m not sure about.

40 is the sweetspot for me. Whats your wrist size? @Watchfisher123

7.25-7.50 depending on the day.

I think many YouTubers stay away from Ginault, especially those with much to lose like Teddy B, because they are pushing the boundaries in terms of how close one can get to someone else's IP without legal consequences. Perhaps a little more than the other "clomage" brands 😉 If I was Teddy I'd stay away too, it may upset some of the manufacturers that he's an AD of.

That said, they absolutely make one hell of a watch that puts many of the much loved and talked about brands to shame. Perhaps it's a good thing they aren't talked about. Means the waiting times are reasonable and prices are reasonable. Hype it up and the appeal may disappear...

You’re going to make me delete this 🤣

Could be their origins of the brand owner as a replica maker and they will never outrun that. Plenty of info about the owner out there

·

AFAIK The flak they have is from the fact that not only they were a replica (or "fake") watch maker, they tried their very best trying to hide and even lied about it.

·

I wish it didn't have a resume on the dial.

I once owned a Ginualt Ocean Rover, picked it up as a novelty but rarely wore it — I just kept going back to my 16610, which it was a very close homage to, plus I didn’t feel right wearing it once I learned of the history: the founder used to make high-end replicas, and the Ginaults were based on some of his best reps. I think that’s the main reason the bigger watch YouTubers stay away from the brand, the historical ties to the rep market. I will say that I try not to hold the past against the brand, and I do like their Silent Service (which is a mashup of a Submariner + 1968 Seamaster 300), but it is what it is…the heritage is a factor that outweighs any perceived value (for me anyway).

Not the most original designs, but the quality is definitely there (no, it’s not quite as good as a Submariner, but it’s many many leagues better than anything from Steinhart or Pagani). For many collectors (not just hoarders) heritage matters a lot, and theirs is unfortunately rooted in the shady replica business, which will always be a factor. I got rid of mine less than a month after purchase.
