Deep dive in to Grand Seiko 9SA5

A good read on the new movement GS made in their 60 anniversary. A new escapement by GS.

"While it was initially available in two limited edition models, the caliber 9SA5 eventually made its way into a regular production model — the 2021 Heritage Collection’s SLGH005 — making the Grand Seiko Dual Impulse Escapement only the second non-Swiss-lever escapement to achieve series production in a wristwatch after the co-axial"

It’s amazing that GS keeps innovating at this level. While I’m very happy to see it, I would want to ask them why they find it worth continuing to invest in friction reduction in escapements, when they themselves have already disrupted that area with a frictionless contactless regulator, I.e. spring drive.

I don't know too, but I remember in one of GS interviews. They mentioned that it takes years to train a water maker. And watch makers itself, not just the watch is more important to GS. The continuous refinement of their skills and innovation is in their culture. Just like how they drop the chronometer label and brand it with GS; as a way to indicate that GS is much more precise than standard certified chronometer.

I felt that, they coming up with 9SA5 is what is expected from them, and that is what distinguishes them from other watch companies
