Why collect these useful, valuable, appreciated, and accessorizable watches? SAT Prep Edition

As a prefice, I admit this is me in mid-winter half-trolling my favorite semianonymous online watch community as an homage to @aurelian's recent poll, which is about favorite yt stars who are also crunchers. Still, it comes from a place of genuine interest and respect. Collections can be about whatever they are about: being lavish or economical, quiet or aggressive, style or resale. Regardless, the reason has the potential to be fascinating and beautiful. To try to capture some of that detail, I've added (recommended) instructions for responding to this poll/survey. First, answer the title question without checking the set responses. STOP Then, try answering using 1 or more of the numbered options (1. money, 2. use, 3. appreciation, 4. fashion). STOP Third, I have given some preset combo answers since I suspect collectors' primary motivations often include duality, e.g. of financial value plus function, function plus design, etc. STOP Finally, if you wish, write a sentence or a short essay on why you answered the way you did. Back and forth on a given answer is at the discretion of the person posting their opinion. Remember, this is not a question about why you like a watch or part of your collection, but rather the whole collection. In other words, what does the collection say about you? To recap, which of these describe the reason(s) for your watch collection. More than 1 may apply. 1. Consequences can have actions, too: money. 2. Actions have consequences: use. 3. Viva La Difference: appreciation. 4. Crystal as in Pepsi: fashion/I want to look the part Now, read the answers and choose the best one.

I choose 4 because appearances are important as well as use. To some extent design (toughness, artistry) are important as well, though in that way, my collection is more aspirational than functional. I also value the money that I earn every day watches keep me from getting written up by my boss. Realistically, though, I'm not sure I would lose much money if I relied on, say, my smartphone.

It's 2 and 3 for me, with a dash of 4...

I require a watch for my job, and I appreciate that a set of tiny gears and springs can accurately tell me the time. At the same time, I often match my watch to my clothing/uniform.

Function over fashion, but the reason for redundant amounts of a functional device is mostly fashion. I prefer the term style though, as it is less fleeting and externally influenced. "Fashion is a hobby for those with no style."

I see what you are saying. I chose "fashion" on purpose, and see it as neutral grand scheme, but it may be perceived as too negative.
