An important question to ask when buying a used GWM5610

Back when I first bought my first Casio G-Shock GWM5610 in 2013/2014, there was a concern about units that had a faulty tilt sensor. This meant that the Auto Light feature would not work. For some people who were not keen on using the feature, those folks never bothered to return their watch for a replacement.

Fast forward to 2023. Ten-ish year later. Some of those people have decided to clean out their desk drawers and sell their old forgotten G-Shocks. Some of those watches are still running on the original batteries and those that sat in the dark have drained the battery in in.

If for some crazy reason, you just want an old GWM5610, ( or if you're not old enought to remember the Great Tilt Sensor Debacle), then please make sure to ask if the Tilt Sensor on their watch is working or ask them to test the Auto Light feature and confirm they are working. Some owners can quickly tell you if it works. Some can't remember. Some are pretending to not remember and are trying to sell you a defective watch.

The ones with watches that's still working, can easily test it by activating the Auto Light feature. (Press and hold the Light button for 3 seconds and the A.EL icon shows up; then tilt the watch in a dimly light room to activate the light).

As for the ones that have a dead battery, I would recommend just staying away from them. Unless the selller replaces the battery and tests it, then you're just gambling with your money. If you decided to buy one that has a dead battery, don't pay a lot for them. Consider it as buying parts.

Unfornately for me, the time between 2013 and now was too long and I had totally forgotten about the issue until very recently when I bought another one on eBay. I sadyly didn't ask if the Auto Light feature worked. Now, I'm a regretful owner of a GWM5610 with a bad tilt sensor.

Learn from my mistakes. Ask the question so you don't waste your money and live in regret. OR.. better yet... just buy the most current model available.

Someone reminded that you can use the built-in Tilt Sensor diagnostic:

To access the tilt-sensor diagnostic screen:

  • In timekeeping mode, press buttons (A), (B) and (C) simultaneously

  • The screen will display TLT

  • The display will show ‘8888’ when the sensor is activated

  • Press any button to return to normal

People purposely leave out how they wore there gshocks to sell them. I have never had one good interaction from someone selling a gshock from California. When i bought my gwg-1000 the guy just said normal use. The guy took it swimming in the ocean and there was pitting under the band guards on the back plate and he argued with me for 3 days and did nothing to make it right.

Why would anyone want to sell one of these ?

They are awesome and they do not cost thousands of dollars.

It is my go-to-watch when I know that I may scratch something more expensive.

They're selling them to get the upgraded version or they want to trade up for one that actually works. The point is that there are people selling their broken G-shock without declaring that it's broken. They pretend to not know or say whatever to sell you their broken watch.
