DOXA SUB 300 β Hands On at GVA WATCH DAYS.

As a native of Geneva and a DOXA fanboy, I couldn’t resist paying a visit to my favorite watchmaker @ Geneva Watch Days, hosted by the Lake and the Hotel Beau Rivage.

If @Kalsota had already posted on the topic, the new DOXA Sub Beta. I’d like to share my experience with DOXA’s Team and their novelty, the DOXA SUB 300β Sharkhunter.

If under the post I had joked about a potential visit to the show, I finally went. Thanks @pororo.watch for your reply :)

While visiting DOXA, I had the opportunity to visit the main showroom, where numerous timepieces were on display, as well as the latest novelty.

DOXA SUB 300β Sharkhunter:

I was frank and gave my opinion on it. I also mentioned our comments on the timepiece. Unfortunately I couldn't wear it, the strap was too small, as many journalists took most of their models for a review (big wrist problems, huh).

Here some pics, shot on iPhone lol...

Hardware:

My first impression of the piece is the coldness of the ceramic case, which weighs quite a lot. The watch is hard to make out in photos, but in real life, it's quite interesting and pleasant to hold. Costing almost 7000 CHF, I felt like I was touching a precious object. the doxa team is aware that such pieces cannot show their full potential in photographs. For example, Le grain du dial is very beautiful but impossible to really feel unless you have it in front of you.

The backlash: "that date ... meh"

The sales rep made me understand after my remarks that the target audience was not the brand's regulars. The choice of the "ghostdate" in black is a choice from DOXA. They knew they were going to get a lot of backlash for this choice, and I consider it a luxury to receive criticism for something you were aware of.

Frankly, the watch is cool and a bit badass, the gold is really intriguing and stands out well with the watch. But I would never use it as a tool watch. To all my fellow DOXA fans, this watch is not for us, and DOXA knows it. The brand's aim is to gain popularity, and with the Beta, it's setting itself apart from the rest. I therefore support their approach, which I believe to be legitimate.

It's a piece that's off the brand's beaten track and aimed at a different customer. It's a flashy piece, just like its price tag, that's sure to get noticed by a particular type of "clientèle". What's more, it points the way to a potential ceramic range, doesn't it?

Voilà, no more Beta for me.

Here is my DOXA EXPERIENCE :

Image

I need this.

  • First of all, a sales rep immediately noticed my SUB 200, which led to a wonderful interaction that lasted until the end of the day.

  • I was very well received and treated, despite the fact that I'm a young guy with a DOXA. I briefly introduced myself and told him about my experience with my SUB 200 in the Swiss Army. The representative was amazed that I had applied the essence of their brand of tool watches.

  •  The representative had me try out and get to grips with absolutely ALL the DOXA catalog. A dream come true for me because DOXA doesn't exist in the physical watch market in Switzerland. Since 2001, DOXA's strategy has been to focus entirely on online sales. The representative can even show you some vintage pieces, straight from their museum. In particular my favorite, the 750 gmt.

Image

The DOXA ARMY, with its bronze bezel, runs in competition @GPGH 2023.

  • On the DOXA stand, I saw Andrew McUtchen from Time And Tide. A personality who has greatly influenced my passion for watchmaking.

You can't imagine how pleased I was to be able to discuss the brand with the DOXA staff. I did, however, take the liberty of asking a few questions and speaking frankly and honestly about their product - after all, I'm not a journalist, but I'm a brand enthusiast. But my comments were well received. Big thanks to their team.

Fun facts :

- The fish logo hides the letter "j", from the Jenny family.

- Statistically: in Australia, aquamarine and yellow are the best-selling colors, in the Western world, it's the professional. In Northern Europe: darker colors. And in Asia, these are the most versatile colors.

- Most of the OG DOXA AMRY, given to the Swiss Army, remain at the bottom of Swiss Lakes :)

Thx for reading, big thx to DOXA.

Great experience! I agree that full ceramic watches feel unusual on wrist. I've spent time with one from Rado and it was difficult to describe. This version of Doxa is not for everyone for sure. I'd be surprised if any non-WIS would buy this still 🤔

In any case, I'll stick to my Aquamarine!

@bad_storage you are living my dream of visiting watch museums, showrooms, and factories of watchmakers in switzerland. :)

fill me in: how is the legibility? it seems poor in the pictures found online; it looks matte, no? the legibility will really be a problem but it is an intriguing watch, indeed, to say the least.

this watch isnt marketed towards us and i agree too! it is not meant, also, for banging as well like what you stated. although, fanboys will be fanboys. :) i wish to share your experience when i visit your lovely country (with longines on the top of the visit list, a personal favorite watchmaker of mine) the experience must be so nice: being treated as an enthusiast of the brand and conversing about watchmaking (since i am learning watchmaking right now in my home)

thank you also for mentioning (and this i did not know): they do not have any brick and mortar stores/physical stores anywhere. i was wishfully finding a store here in my country as i am interested in a doxa watch and see how it will fit my wrists since i am interested in procuring one.

p.s. good thing you understood my initial and prior comment in @Kalsota's post 😂 it was lacking the word "think" in the sentence. i have now edited and corrected it. i might be half asleep when i wrote that. 😂

Great write-up! Enjoyed reading it. That’s so neat you got to visit the showroom, chat with them and check out the new merch!

Also a DOXA fanboy. Wearing my Sub 300 Pro on a Tropic today. 😎 (Sorry, bad lighting. It's dark here.)

Anyway, that new SUB 300β Sharkhunter… That’s just not for me. I won’t knock those who like it, though. Different strokes and all that. I guess I’m one of those regulars they mentioned. 😆

I do feel the things I listed in my comment below could greatly improve the look of the 300β:

But what do I know? I’m just another voice in the wind.

Oh, and I also need this clock!

Beautiful! Love the Aquamarine. I keep debating if I should pick one up. At this point, I should just aim for all the colors. What a disease this all is. 🤪

I dislike this new addition, a stupid attempt to look sterile cold and oddly not witchlike. For a company that excels at dive watches, (maybe the best ) this is a very strange move

I’m not a fan of this watch but I certainly don’t fault Doxa for reaching out to a new audience. After buying and selling a Sub 300 Searambler and sticking with a Sinn U50, the U50 almost feels like a modern take on the watch to me.

After seeing this one, it would be interesting to see a Sub 300 with the approach taken on the U50 Professional.

I hope you find the means to achieve your dream. It's true that we're spoiled here, but it's always worth the detour.

You're right to point out the readability. I was invited to go out on the balcony and look at the watch in daylight. I don't think it's as legible as we're used to seeing on a Tool Watch. So yes, the readability is that of an all-black and gold watch 😂

I thought I'd give it a try, my worst fear is that they'll tell me: no!

The watch is really cool, nothing to do with common watches playing on gold and black contrasts.

Your professional is incredible, so legible!
