Steve McQueen, Submariber 5513 and a coffee mug

I have this mug. There are many like it. But this one is mine. That Steve guy made fantastic movies. There’s just one of him.

The photo is by Ron Galellia of Steve McQueen on the set of Papillon in Jamaica 1973. I’ve seen the photo before. And that mug. I own one just like it. Got it from a Japanese store in my neighborhood. Found it to be a secret delight that I have that same mug Steve is drinking out of. Today I decided to post this image above on a watch forum on Facebook. I was surprised, glad that the community responded with curiosity and interest on where to get this mug! Very emphatic. Folks want to get this mug, I see. The connections we make with these icons and their watches is very powerful. To find an object that links us to a giant (god really) persona in the watch communities is—well, all told already. So to stumble upon something unkown still and as utilitarian as a coffee mug that is unique and has a unique story gets at the essence of why we collect. We want to relate and commune with the talismans that link us all. Watches, mugs or coffee. It’s a good, simple thing.

Great. Now I have to start collecting mugs. 😆

Can you believe he was only 43 in that photo? I think it’s true that people used to look older for their age. Maybe that’s why so many of us these days act like we’re toddlers.

Great pose, you got it just right! Though one teeny tiny detail that most people don’t know about McQueen is he wore a 5512 sub, not a 5513, being big time McQueen fans, my uncle and I have researched this quite extensively

Very cool. The pic and the mug, really. Is that a certain style of mug? Never seen one like that before.

What?! He’s 43 there? Sun damage. He sure loved riding his motorcycles out in full sun. Maybe he didn’t believe in sunscreen.

It’s a nice little mug. It’s cozy design and palette is ideal for coffee.

Yeah, Japanese manufacturer from the 60s design. Made larger for the American market.

Nice poster. Sets the right tone in an office setting. I’m thinking it did the job of warding off stupid questions lobbed your way. Or did you just cold pointed at the photo when the situation arises.

It’s a common mistake I’ve seen on other watch blogs too I think it’s cause the 5512 & 5513 are essentially the same watch, the difference is the former has a COSC certified movement and more lines of text on the dial.

They are identical. Sure easy to conflate. Thanks again 😎😃

And—as it relates to the iconic Steve both references are entangled, possibly for longer in the public mind because both 5512 and 5513 are associated with him. Here’s a Hodinkee entry on the matter: https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/phillips-to-auction-steve-mcqueens-rolex-submariner-ref-5513
