The Monopoussoir is back!

Introducing: The Cartier Tortue Is Back – And As A Monopusher Chronograph

Cartier adds one of its oldest shapes to the collectible Privé lineup, as a chronograph and a time-only limited edition.

If I ever win the lottery, one of you better have an in with Cartier Privé that I can call on 🙏

Much as the Tudor BB58 GMT actually makes sense for me, and is probably half affordable if I shuffle around my collection a little....this has won Watches & Wonders for me.

I'm an absolute sucker for the Cartier Privé collection. I highly doubt I'll ever get to jump through the hoops required, but they might be my most coveted collection of watches. I spend most years longing for whatever they announce. The Tank Normale last year has lived in my head rent free.

Rolex waitlists may be the stuff of rumors, but Cartier Privé invites are the stuff of legend.

Get me on that list, give me an Irish-inspired emerald cabochon over a sapphire or ruby, and I'd happily never buy another watch again. Perhaps...

The Monopoussoir is my most favourite out of reach dress watch. I love the design of this watch, effortlessly elegant & classy. If I had a spare 40k I’d jump at the opportunity to pick one up on the used market.

Lol CPCP monopoussoir was 14k on the market in 2018, then influencers got a hold of it and blew it up to almost 80k... then market overall for hyped watches tanked and it now floats at 40ish.

There's a GP ferrari monopusher that has same movement and finer case finish for half that but every influencer is hyping on Cartier lately lol

Can’t fault the influencers there really! Honestly I’d found it years ago scrolling on Watchfinder and seeing a Tortue on ‘highest to lowest’ 😂

What good is a half price GP to someone that wants a Cartier Monopoussoir?

We’re all in control of what we choose to spend our money on. If someone wants to buy something at a price that is acceptable to them, no convincing is going to make them pay less for something they don’t want.

You're missing the point entirely. I never once said to not buy what they like, and get something else - in this case "don't get the Cartier, get a GP whose ref# I didn't even name."

What I'm saying is this exact model is subject to the worst influencer hype behavior, and if you knew about the watch itself you'd know the entire credibility they put behind said hype is the movement. "Oh this CPCP movement was designed in conjunction with the greatest modern minds in the watch industry." If that were the sole reason that watch deserves to blow up 6x, a lesser known GP should also cost the exorbitant amount. I could have been more specific in stating that but c'est la vie 🤷‍♂️

It's a bummer really, I loved the CPCP 2396 in the metal and planned to save up for a few years to get into one... then much like how Doug Demuro hyped the 997.2, A Collected Man blasted social media with the Cartier into the stratosphere 😭

I don’t really care whether I get your point or not. Whatever point you did make came across as extremely arrogant, as does your follow up. Those that made their purchase decisions based on what influencers put across are fools. They may well be, but it’s their money to spend how they like & I’m sure they care little what anyone else thinks.

Haha, I think any chance of hyping up a GP may have died after what John Mayer said in his Ed Sheeran interview 😂💀

They are nice watches but the Cartier is the original when it comes to the THA monopusher. I also don't know how much influencers alone can do. They can kick-start a hype for sure but whether or not it takes off depends on the product, you can't make a product a big success by marketing alone. I believe that many people won't pay a high premium unless they can be convinced something is an original of some sort, i.e. there was nothing like it before (or at least very little). For what it's worth, influencers tried pumping the Laureato, and it came right back down. Doesn't make it bad watch, just not "worth" several times over original retail pricing.

Yeah one thing standing out to me here is that of all these influencers supposedly pushing or hyping up these models, I’m yet to see one actually buy one.

Rolex I do see on the wrist of a lot influencers, but it’s never the latest release either.

I’m not really convinced that influencers have all that much sway on the high end of things either.

Look at the ‘Pepsi bezel will be discontinued because it’s too hard to produce’ rumor. Complete nonsense. I’d say the influencers repeating that line probably heard it from grey market dealers trying to offload expensive stock at a short term premium.

At Breguet, Lange and Bulgari, looking at the super high end bespoke stuff at events, nobody who actually owned one there in attendance had a clue who any of the ‘watch influencers’ were. Kinda like sports pundits. We’ll listen to them as audience members, but none of the actual players are tuning in to hear their feedback.

It's all about "the algorithm". If an influencer B sees his colleague A got loads of views on a video about X. B will make a video about X, and so will everyone else. That's (I think), in part, why all of them cover the same crap all at the same time amd nobody wants to make videos about niche or more interesting stuff... and if they do, "the algorithm" buries it for most.

Talking about the pepsi bezel got clicks, so everybody jumped on it. Especially the grey market must have loved that one, conflict of interest and all. "the algorithm" took care of the rest and distributed it to everyone. Why in the hell people believed that, I do not know. Perhaps they hoped they could make $$$. If the yield and resulting margin was low, the solution is to raise the price and get the margin up. You don't just ditch the second most popular model in the entire catalog because it was difficult to make. What kind business they think Rolex is in? It costs 10 grand, it better be difficult to make. But if you are making a living on clicks, then you just roll with it... I guess 😏
