Tudor Style 38

After so many years of learning about watches, I can say that I like hypes, but I can not say that I am always attached to them. Matter of fact, I find hypes very interesting but still make my own mind about a watch. Because you really don‘t know who really hypes. The seller or the buyer?

So where do I stand as an individual watch enthusiasts?

Well, let me try to illustrate this by some field examples: Instead of the highly beloved Rolex Submariner I love my Rolex Oyster Perpetual. Instead of the extremely hyped Tissot PRX, I think the Tissot PR100 fits better on my wrist and even the turquoise dial Casio MTP1302 that I actually like very much, was already familiar to me before the hype, since I had the same model in anthracite dial and liked it as much as the other dial variations.

And here is another one: Tudor, but not a BlackBay! I have made my choice and decided to go for the Tudor Style 38. Maybe the most underrated watch Tudor has ever produced. I think Tudor’s marketing department was sleeping when this model was launched and influencers still sleeping on it. A great opportunity to make your own thoughts about it and decide for yourself without any bias, if this watch is something for you.

What can I say? I don‘t want to influence either but it is a watch with a lot of quality power, elegant appearance and Tudors signature on it. It feels very real when I say, yes this is a watch for me. For you? Nobody knows..

RIP Tudor Style

2015 - 2023

we never knew you - and that’s the point. Quietly introduced, silently killed off, this was never a watch that Tudor thought would set the world alight. It’s all filler, no killer. Many of the style range was compared to the Datejust (rightly or wrongly), so that’s why no one really took it to heart.

In the immortal words of Paddy McGuinness: No likey, no lighty.

Good night

I like these as well as the Glamour. These days they are probably a better watch for the money compared to the Prince line. But people don't wear "nice" watches anymore. Everyone wants "sports tool watches" => Black Bay & Pelagos.

You literally nailed it 😅and it is 10% true. I think if they would launch something like this today, it would be within the top 5 alternative list to OP/DJ. I think the BlackBay 36/39 took all the credits.

Indeed you are right and another problem of the Style line is, these watches look different on pictures than in reality. Pictures show a Citizen alternative while you get high quality material. In addition to that you can chose between couple of color option and smooth or even fluted bezel options.

I think it would not - Tudor already suffer from stigma for trying to ape their bigger brother, and the Black Bay is a case in point. Why would you want to have a Datejust alternative, it’s bad enough living in the shadow of Rolex, let alone trying to copy them. Tudor fans are forever a mystery to me, always the bridesmaid, never the bride, but they could be if they actually dated the right partners. This would be as cynical now as it would then. Tudor actually killed off most of their decent lines in pursuit of the “hype” watches the Black Bay has become: FastRider, Hydronaut, Heritage Chrono, North Flag (THE most underrated Tudor watch ever)… I could go on. I used to love going into Tudor parts of the ADs 8-10 years ago, some of those models were banging, now the Tudor website is literally Black Bay, Black Bay, Black Bay, Pelagos, Ranger, and when you scroll deep, 1926 and Royal… where would the Style fit it there? They’ve made their bed, they can lie in it. And fix the bezels - wonky markers and lume drop-outs at these prices are disgusting.

Style is great Most of their models are underrated. I’d always bet on the non-hyped models. Over time rarity wins

This is a tricky one for me. It's a nice case with a very conservative dial design. And I think the movement is a Tudor-modified 2824.(Please correct me if I'm wrong.)

My only question would be: Why would I buy this type of watch from Tudor?

These watches have the T601 caliber based on Sellita. I think the reason I have decided to go for that model is not because of the general perception on Tudor watches but because my personal preferences that shifted during the last couple of years. After two decades of nearly collecting and experiencing all kind of watches from different genres I settled within the world of elegant sportswatches or you could describe them as sporty dresswatches. 38mm x 45-46mm cases equipped on steel bracelets is my sweet spot. In addition to brand history, my collection is also all about dials, dial colors and if possible, quality craftmanship. The BB36 or 39 is a great option but for me more on the sporty side. The Style is way more elegant, like if you would compare the Explorer with the Oyster Perpetual. The BB is for me the Explorer but I like the OP. And now comes the biggest advantage of the Style. I paid for a used but mint condition one from a watch dealer only around 1.4€. Even if you would buy it new, the Style still belongs to the most affordable option. But if you feel and taste the quality of the case, bracelet and dial, you can compare it with 5K options easily.

Okay, for 1.4 it is a different question, I would very much agree.
