Casio GShock GW5000U

So this is on Amazon for £244. Does that sound a good deal? I've also seen it online for £177 but that sounds suspiciously cheap. It looks great but is it 2½ 5610s?

No, that feels overpriced as there are more affordable Casios. In that range you’re starting to get into mechanical/autos.

There are comparable G Shocks for around £100 - like you say the 5610 for example. This model is an upgrade however in terms of build quality and materials so in reality it's whether you view it as worth spending more.

Casio lost it's mind since few years.

If they offer good solid watches for under 100 it's all fine nostalgia, which was awesome modern high tech in my age.

But starting to offer 200, 300, 500, even 5,000 dollar/euro/pounds for theirs stuff I would rate them as a sad, outdated, low tech, 80's trash.

Casio didn't made anything major different or modern since 40 years. They use basicly the same "movements", with the same functions, the same materials and same design for 40 years.

I would even go that far to say buy nothing from casio that costs more than 50 bucks.

For 200 you can get another solid watch, quartz or even automatic. Or if you want something digital, buy any smartwatch.

The 5000 U has a stainless steel core and a screwdown caseback, where the other 56xx have a resin core and 4 screws for the caseback. Plus solar and multiband 6. If you like to have a steel core give it a shot, if that dosen t care you get the 5610- same features, at least 100 quid cheaper in full resin

I waited for a sale and got my 5610 for $70…which is probably why I don’t have a 5000 series 😎

I also prefer lighter watches.

The other upgrade with the GW5000U is the strap material is softer and more pliable.

Euro price usually around €250, which would would be closer to £220.

Yeah that was one of the main attractions. All day wearability. I'm just wondering if i am overly affected by the Mad Watch Collector's infectious enthusiasm for it 😁

To me it's worth it, it really does feel more premium.

I had a 5610 first, but my then teenage son took a shine to it and decided to take it on permanent loan.

Side by side they are very similar. The 5610 has the old school charm with the multiple colours. The 5600 looks more stealth, with the a nice tiny dab of red.
