Hey Trevor—I’m not even sure what these types of shots are called, do you have term for these? Almost like a watch portrait, lol.
I am using a macro lens but at a distance where a standard lens would be fine too. I like to use the macro to get a tight shot so that when I inevitably crop 20-30% off for the final product I still retain a decent amount of resolution. If using a standard lens I may need to crop off more to get the same shot at the desired focal length, but that also depends on the lens as well, etc.
It doesn’t take long to set this type of shot, embarrassingly quick actually. About one minute to mount the watch and place on a black canvas, turn on some desk lamps and shoot. Hence it’s a quick shot and not perfect; ideally I’d have more lighting on the underside so that I don’t fade too quickly to black. But being better means spending more time and I’m always in a rush my friend, sorry 😎
