Acquiring the Holy Grail

Many of us desire to own a Grail watch.  I define a grail watch as a must have watch that is out of reach for one or more reasons.  For me, my grail watch was produced in limited numbers, sold exclusively in Japan and was selling at a price near the five digit mark which was unthinkable for fiscally conservative people like my wife and myself.

For a long time I would constantly search the internet for this grail watch.  I bid in many online auctions just to be disappointed by the high final price.  Finally one day a watch appeared on eBay auction site at a more reasonable price than the others I have bid on.  The pictures although very clear seemed to indicate that there may be the smallest dent in the case but then again it may just be the way the light was reflecting.  I actually didn’t care if it had a dent because I wanted it so darn bad.  I got approval from my wife aka “CEO No” when it comes to extravagance.

So the watch arrived the day prior to the beginning of the WatchCrunch 1 watch challenge.  I was shaking with excitement as I fumbled with the link I was removing to make the band fit perfect.  The watch was on my wrist, the challenge began and I was about to get intimate with my grail watch. So as I write this I am preparing to post my day Seventeen photo.

So let’s answer some unasked questions.  Are you still as excited about that watch as you were when you were chasing it? Absolutely, I can’t look at my wrist without smiling and I wonder if any other watch would look so beautiful in that spot.

Are you experiencing a sort of post partum syndrome now that the journey is over?  Not really, It was the prize which was important. Had it been too easy to acquire I may have felt that it wasn’t a Holy Grail journey but I still look for other pieces for my collection.  It’s kind of like walking down the street hand in hand with your dream girl and a young woman with an exceptional ass crosses your path.  You are going to look, it is art in motion, human instinct, it cannot be controlled.

Does your watch have an aura about it that makes everyone notice?  It has an aura which only attracts me to it.  Remember most people(peasants) out there don’t even notice that you’re wearing a wrist watch.

Is the watch worth all of the trouble and expense? OH YES!

I will never own my grail.  I could probably afford it at MSRP if I sold my sold my whole collection to fund it and threw a line of credit on top.  LOL But I’ll never get it because it’s trading near three times MSRP on the secondary market.  Needless to say, these are not the models that an AD will sell to a Muggle like me.

I am sorry to hear that.  If it is your grail watch, selling all others shouldn't seem like such a sacrifice.  Why not a one watch collection with a spectacular piece?  It is inexcusable to me that any AD wouldn't take your order and fill it as soon as they can get the watch.  There are two brands(rhymes with Rolex and Patek) whos watches I will not even consider buying new because they allow their ADs play those games.

Bingo.  Nobody is going to sell me a platinum Daytona for $80k when market value is closer to $200k

Consider this Platinum Zenith.  Rolex bought the El Primero movements from Zenith for years.

I will never own my grail either. The Rolex 1016. I couldn't pay as much as they go for and to be honest wouldn't if I could.

I have a Zenith and plan on another one soon.  Platona is still a grail for me in the unattainable sense, though.

My grail is currently unobtainable. I choose to think that the future is unwritten (wishful thinking on my part).

But such a nice choice.  I hope some day you find a way.
