The only fake I unknowingly bought was a SARB017 on eBay. It was early on and I was not convinced someone would go out of their way to clone what was a $300 watch at the time. I then came across a post and had me wondering. Opened the case back and it was a total POS in side. Wrong Seiko movement and swimming in oil. All my nice pieces come from either an AD or a reputable grey dealer (actual dealer, not youtube style flippers).

Tons of articles and videos on the topic, but for the most part you captured a few good warning signs, but others I would strongly suggest:

  • Break out the loop. Knock offs are finished like shit and most the time they will look the part under a magnifying loop, especially if you have seen or handled an original.

  • Break out the calipers. Rarely are the reps 1:1 copies. Thicker movements are often a tell tale sight. There is a reason there a tons of sub reps and fewer Daytona reps. There is a reason the Daytona is so thin for a chrono and it costs a lot to make an integrated movement like that. Calipers will solve many of the issues.

  • Look at the movement. Often times all the other stuff looks great and you cannot tell until you open the back and see the parts are not what they should be. Nor are they finished the same. Countless references on it and a perfect example is the Rolex Parachrom spring.

  • Interact with the watch - How is the bezel play? What does the clasp feel like? How does the crown engagement feel? Is there a ghost date? Most of the time, if you know what you are looking for, you can tell right away by these two.

Again, there are lots of great suggestions including many of the recommendations you shared, but if ever in doubt, can always take it to an AD.
