Howard Miller Mantle Clock Model No. 612436

This clock was gifted to me by a friend, as a housewarming gift.

It came with a winding key, and some other part. I don't think the extra part is a key. It looks like part of a mechanism. It's roughly convex, with the caveat that it isn't smooth. (See pictures; I photographed both the front and back sides of it.)

(My friend has no idea what the part is, how to properly wind it, set it, or even if the clock is working or not.) 😎

Does anyone know what this part is? I'm asking because I'd like to get this clock running myself, if possible. Calling a professional horologist is Plan B. This clock is in excellent shape, and I don't think there's very much wrong with it, if anything at all. I think it may just be a matter of a few turns of the key, so-to-speak.

Thanks in advance for your help! 🤠

Here are the instructions to it.

It really doesn't look like a moving part but part of the furniture to me. If not part of the door latch, possibly just a clip on the back (or inside) to hold the key or instructions? Despite not seeing evidence of screw head wear around the hole, that's my guess.

Anyway, three winding arbors! The instructions say Rev 8/80 so presumably this was made after 1980.

I think your observations are spot on! 👍 Thanks! 😃

I wonder if it is some sort of movement lock for when the clock of transported. I know on pendulum clocks you have to either remove the pendulum or secure it some how.
