Vintage Rotary Manual Wind Just Came In

Cool Ebay find that I thought was interesting. Needs a new crystal eventually. Open to suggestions on what to get for that. I was thinking a top hat sapphire crystal. It wears pretty nice and is super light and not to thick. Really like the sunburst blue dial and raised markers. Just wanted to share my new toy. Also, if anyone has info on this piece it would be greatly appreciate.

It doesn't look dated at all to me, but I'm a tad anachronistic. I guess that is a scratch at 2 o'clock because otherwise I wouldn't be worried about an acrylic crystal that can be polished ad infinitum.

I'd presume that case back markings are your best clues.

Pop the back - that’s where the real information lies.

Nice watch

So m.knight twist - no marking on the inside of the case back and movement - I cleaned it up enough to know it was at least pretty old from all the gunk - but no Wings on the gears. Not sure - it was not very expensive either way

Oh that’s clean. Looks like an AS or Standard 1803 or 1951 depending on the beat rate and it has a date complication. Mid-70s likely.

To be fair it was so clean I can see under the balance wheel and make out the AS logo, so half the work was done for me, plus it looks like an AS movement anyway due to the bridge. You could probably read the number quite easily to confirm.

I don't think you could install a sapphire crystal there even if you wanted to. Acrylic and sapphire crystals are not interchangeable, unless we're talking of, say, a pocket watch, in which the crystal is usually held in place through affixing it to the bezel with some adhesive.

ahh that’s good to know - I cleaned it up pretty good with some polywatch - I didn’t realize that was the case as far as swapping out crystals - see you learn things here hahah
