My family emigrated from HK to Canada in the winter of 1956, cannot recall when I did not dabble with mechanical timepieces. Started with vintage but too many crooks in the business. Discovered videos on YouTube during the global pandemic. Had no idea Rolex had won a fair fight to control the industry, not a fan nor a hater. People used to call me the Watch Guy but no longer. Most recent purchase was Omega DSOM shocked that it was $16500cad inflated price. Almost time to finish my harmless watch affectation
probably a Timex Mickey Mouse in Hong Kong which my uncle bought for me at some local fair. He was my best friend, took things apart but not repair.
Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?
There have been so many but I can talk about my Breitling Transocean Worldtime that I saw on a cruise but decided to not close the deal. when I returned to Canada saw the same watch in a boutique closing sale. Picked up the watch for 40% discount no 13% tax.
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?
Buy at your realistic budget, don’t bother with entry level if that is not you, likewise don’t blow your brains out with too much$$$
Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?
I will always look at Breitling Tudor reminds me of when I was still a young man
Grand Seiko,
Cartier because I love visiting Paris
Omega because I am Chinese
Panerai because the design is unique
Baume and Mercier for a deeply nostalgic reason
FP Journe because it reminds me of Paris
Oris because of my brilliant mom
Fortis because it reminds me to not squander my extra dollars
Rolex because it gives me a good laugh about so many different events but mostly about the fella who sold me hardwood flooring
Q: What is your grail watch and why?
I don’t have a grail. One man’s ceiling is another man’s floor, line from a Paul Simon pop song that my older brother loved to pieces but made him unhappy. I have experienced hard moments in my life but watches are just trinkets without the magic that we assign, they are not more or less
