New Long Term Save - What Do You Think?

I was thinking of making either a vintage IWC 3706 chronograph

Or a vintage 3713 dopplechronograph my next long term save. (An actual 3705 is way above my price point).

Does anyone have experience with either? I’m leaning more towards the 3713 because of it’s history with Richard Habring’s creation of the double chrono mechanism on top of the Valjoux 7750.  What do you think? Which would you choose?

Thanks for sharing! A great video. I like the big Pilot but it’s too big for me. Another thing I’m seriously considering is a vintage Mark XII

Both excellent choices, my preference would likely be the 3713 or more likely a Mark XII, big fan of those. Don't exclude the BP43 without trying it on, an incredible watch and I found it wears better than the 41 Chronograph. Of course very personal, but do give it a go, in my opinion very much more versatile than you would think, particularly with rubber strap and bracelet options and a very robust build.

Thanks @danmitch. I do keep jumping between the 3713 and the Mark XII. The Mark XII has been on my radar the longest and it would make sense within my collection. I've got a Speedmaster so I don't need another chrono. But the double chrono is so cool! I've not given the BP 43 a fair shake. Part of the issue is that I just don't like the style of hands on any of the new IWC models. I prefer the baton hands as opposed to the sword hands. Also the BP is a little out of my price range. I am not trying to go above 6k. But I've not tried a BP on my wrist. The Mark XX looks great to me and I tried on the Top Gun pilot's watch and really loved that. But ultimately, I think it will be between the 3713 and the Mark XII. I'd love to get my hands on a Mark XI for collecting purposes, but that too is out of my reach. What I'd really love is the IWC x Hodinkee collaboration. That strikes all the right notes for me. But also is sadly out of reach.

To confuse things further, at the opposite extreme from the BP43, it may be worth looking at the Pilot 36mm - very close proportions to the MkXII and a really lovely, robust and versatile watch on an excellent bracelet.

Thanks! Somehow I’ve overlooked that one. About to check it out now!!!

update: this is a great recommendation and is now in the mix. Definitely want an IWC as the next purchase. What do you think of the Tribute to Mark XI? I sort of think it’s a miss.

The 40mm case seemed silly to me, not really a tribute other than the simplified dial (and that’s from me as a big IWC fan). Don’t believe it was popular. Sorry to have confused with the 36mm but I think it is a real star. Don’t be put off by the “not in-house” comments, the work they do on the base movements is very well regarded and the accuracy in my experience is first class. (Bear in mind the MkXII was actually a JLC calibre).

I agree on the case size being ridiculous. I think a real tribute would’ve adhered to the original size and with no date. I’d love to see something like the HODINKEE Mk xi collaboration brought into more regular production. Maybe the same dimensions with a ceramic or other material. Like the tribute to 3705. No need to apologize about bringing up the 36mm. That’s a great option! And I’m sort of over the whole in-house movement debate. The term itself is so nebulous. So that doesn’t bother me. I’ll definitely look to try it on. And actually I think the JLC movement in the MKxii is like a hidden gem. That’s why if I went vintage I’d go with the Mkxii instead of MkXV.  But I’m definitely now going to try on the 36mm. I really appreciate the recommendation!
