To my Dad

The pic is of the top my desktop PC here at the office. I keep a few knick-knacks there to "personalize" my little piece of cube-land ๐Ÿ˜€

The watch is an ordinary quartz piece, a Caravelle (by Bulova) that was given to my Dad when he retired back in the mid-90's. Dad wasn't a watch guy really. He could appreciate them, but didn't like wearing anything bulky on his wrist. So this Caravelle , being small and VERY thin became his daily-driver which he wore right up until the day he passed in 2016.

Dad was a man of few words, worked hard and looked after his family. A typical Boomer bread-winner if you will. With only a 9th grade education, he left his little isolated island community at age 17 and moved into the city, where eventually he was successful at enrolling in community college and earned a diploma qualifying him to work as a boiler plant engineer; which he did for the next 37 years. He was a handy guy, worked with his hands and could literally "put an ass in a cat"!

I miss my Dad. I keep his little nondescript watch next to my desk to remind me of him and to remind me of how hard he worked for us.

I never told him often enough that I loved him ... I wish I had.

If you have special people in your life, do so ... you'll be glad that you did!

Have a great day folks! ๐Ÿ˜€

Iโ€™m wearing my dadโ€™s old watch in Buckingham palace today.

We lost him in January and this was the last little bit of his love of beautiful things and mechanics he kept on him right to the end.

My dad was a watch guy, but never had the funds for the watches he lusted for.

Didn't have the greatest relationship with him, but I do think of him sometimes when I get, or wear, a piece I think he'd appreciate.

Your comments resonate with me. I miss my Dad, but I wouldn't say I had a "Leave it to Beaver" type relationship with him. We didn't have a stormy relationship, but he was more "hands off" when it came to raising myself and my brothers. Child-rearing was my Mom's job.

I think some of those old-timers figured that as long as they were a steady, reliable, bread-winner type, then that's what being a father was all about. Times have changed.

That said, though he wasn't a watch guy per se, he did buy an old Vostok off of a Soviet sailor back in the early 90's, just 'cause he himself was a "sailor" at heart and he liked the looks of it (it has a submarine on the dial).

I have that one too ... it still runs and I think of Dad when I occasionally wear it ๐Ÿ˜€
