New classic from a ‘new’ microbrand

Just received another addition to the watch box. This is from the E. Stohlman watch company, an offshoot of the Maryland Watch Works, a small company not far from us who has been producing customized movements for several other small manufacturers for some time. Now Eugene Stohlman is beginning to produce some of his own. We saw and ordered this watch at the District Time Watch Fair in March and its just come in.

This look like a real labor of love. The watch is cased in rhodium plated sterling silver with a stepped mother-of-pearl dial. The applied numerals are raised with an Art Deco font and a shiny bluing. The inside bezel is engraved, similar to a Rolex, with the company name. The movement is an in-house finished MWW 7801, based on the tried and true ETA 2824 and seen through a sapphire case back. The weight is decorated with a Calvert Cross, part of the Maryland flag. The day and date windows are finished with a fine silver framing. A knurled crown has a sapphire cap signed with a stylized ‘O’ that matches the ‘O’ in Stohlman on the dial. Curved and bowed lugs complete a classic look. The band is extremely supple and thin but tough red alligator leather.

Overall this watch the extremely legible and has a strong wrist presence. It’s my first silver-cased watch, so we’ll see if it develops a patina, or if the rhodium prevents that. It’s fairly light at 94 grams, due to the light weight strap, as the case feels very substantial. Quite a start for the brand! I let you know more how it wears over time.

That’s a good description, with the look of the ‘legs’, I can see that!🪲🪲

Wow. This watch looks so great. Thanks for all the details. It's right up my alley and looks a bit like my Ophion. I've never heard of this brand but thanks to you I'll definitely be checking them out!

I had not heard of Ophions, thanks! I just looked at their website, beautiful watches and I see the resemblance in the case and lugs.
