ALL: share your buying/collecting trends for 2022

Would love to hear about what you bought this year and the reasoning behind it.

I will start- This year I found myself getting into chronographs, regardless of movement. So I picked up a few microbrand chronos and even an Omega speedy date, that I had wanted for quite some time.

I also focused a lot more on sport/dress style watches, whereas in years past I had been mostly into field/dive.

There was a clear shift in my collecting mentality, in addition to the change in type of watch, I tried to focus on a few brands that I really like, such as Oris, Ball, and a few microbrands. That also meant I was less impulsive when I saw a great deal.

So let's hear from you and what your 2022 collecting was like!

This year has been a roller coaster! I have acquired and let go of so many pieces! Other than a few keepers, my watchbox looks very different from the beginning of the year!

Watches that left:

SARB033, Frederique Constant Vintage Rally Chronograph, Oris BC3, Lorier Neptune, SARB065, Helson Shark Diver, Christopher Ward Sealander (soon to leave), Seiko quartz chronograph, VanBanner PM2.0

Watches that joined:

Sinn103, Nomos Club Campus, Christopher Ward Trident 300, Grand Seiko SBGP003, Hamilton Murph 38.

Apart from the ones I chose to add, the also received 2 Tissots as gifts..which has been a bonus.

That is a nice mix rotating in/out of the collection. Definitely seems like you "upgraded" many pieces by going with the Grand Seiko, Sinn, and Nomos. Also, very jealous of the new Murph you picked up!
So where do you see your collection going in 2023?

My collecting has been on a big pause, as I build up the funds for a Tudor BB58. Hoping to pick that up early 2023, and then get back to more affordable options.

how do you like the Speedy date??

Probably taking a break with maybe getting rid of a few other pieces . focusing on enjoying what I have.

Two many in, some out, but collection completed last month.

Despite wearing watches for 50+ years, I didn't start a "collection" until this year... and my 2022 collecting could be described as "cheap."

I've been wearing an Apple Watch since 2018 for health reasons, but when I started a new job working at home full-time I found that I was losing track of time and started wearing my older analog watch on the other wrist (a Seiko meca-quartz chrono c. 2012). I'd always admired the Rolex Submariner and Omega Seamaster, but eased into purchasing new watches with a budget-friendly $42 Casio Duro in February. I wanted to try a mechanical watch, and picked up an Invicta 1953 for $88 in April. I've also admired military field watches like the A-11 and A-17 (and Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical), so I picked up a Timex MK1 Mechanical for $85 on sale in July. My last purchase of the year was a Black Friday deal on a G-Shock GW-M5610-1CR for $70 to have beater that is lighter and more functional than the Duro.

With the $10 for a new battery in the Seiko, my "collection" still comes in at less than $300 for the year... resulting in: a Chronograph; a Quartz Diver; a Vintage-style Mechanical Diver; a Vintage-style Mechanical Field; and a Solar/6-band Digital "beater" (in addition to the Apple Watch). I have no need for a dress watch, but if I were inclined, I'd look at a Timex Marlin or a vintage '60's Gruen. In 2023, I'll probably pick up some new straps... and if income with the new job picks up, maybe my first >$100 watch. 😎

some more non swiss. smaller iconic Cartier watches. no Rolex. micro brands with high craftmanship. some limited edition collab brands. some jewelry pieces with diamonds. a tourbillon AP.

I absolutely love it. The size is perfect for my wrist (17cm), and it's pretty thin all things considered.

I say that every month 🤣

The experience on how I got my last watch, and the watch itself, just works as the perfect ending to the collecting part of this hobby for me.  It even filled the last slot in the watchbox.

There may come a day where I sell the majority of my watches to get one retirement watch, like a Lange 1, but I don't retire for another 4 years minimum, so...

This is a good topic.  My thinking this year is to try to keep the collection at 8 pieces.  I think this is the maximum I can have and keep from feeling that I'm neglecting something.  Anything over that and something invariably sits unworn.  I think eventually I can go to 6 and maybe stretch to 4.  But right now, something has to leave if it's number 9.

In this year:

AP Diver, Blancpain Bathyscaphe, AP ROC, and Rolex TT Sub.

Out:

GO SeaQ Panodate, Omega 300m Pro, Anordain OT Edition White, SUF 180 Turquoise, Rolex 16570 (gifted to wife)

I'm currently at 8 with two watches on order that will come around spring time I guess.  I may let it sit at 10 for a bit, but a couple will eventually have to go.

I somehow managed to buy JUST 1!!!! (Sorta)

Picked up my Longines Big Eye in June, and that's it for the year!

Also placed a preorder for a Baltic MR-01, but it won't be delivered until mid 2023 so it doesn't count 😉
