A New Wall Clock!

Hey Crunchers, just wanted to share this new (to me) Sterling & Noble clock that I won at auction. Some of us have the same affection for clocks as we do watches, so this is for you.

If you saw my recent NWA (Mathey-Tissot), you are then aware of my liking for Roman numerals and (not sure this is the proper descriptor) "classic" watch/clock styling, with fancy hands and an antique vibe.

This clock is not an antique; it's thoroughly modern and is powered by two separate quartz movements, one for the hours/minutes and one just for the seconds. When it arrived, the seconds hand was dead, despite a new battery and my taking the movement apart for repair. But this movement was strictly a seconds movement, with no provision for hours or minutes - it had one post, protruding 5mm from the base and that was it. I searched for a replacement all day and came up empty. There were no markings on the movement to go by either.

I had to figure out a solution, since a simple movement swap was now out of the question.

The broken movement conformed to the standard overall size, which was helpful, so I then began looking for a standard movement that I could somehow modify. But I wanted the seconds hand to sweep like an electric clock, not TICK like a regular cheap quartz clock movement. Fortunately those are available so I bought one online and when it arrived, proceeded to remove with a Dremel tool the hour and minute moving parts, leaving only the seconds hand post protruding, which I cut down to 5mm with some wire nips. Fortunately, the post was already sized for the seconds hand!

I put it in, adjusted all the hands to not interfere with each other and everything worked. The seconds hand sweeps like an electric clock/Spring Drive/Bulova Precisionist. I have to admit, I'll walk by and pause just to see it move like that. I know, I'm weird.

I put it up in the kitchen because the case matches our white cabinets and trim. I rather like how it looks:

Anyway, just wanted to share my new clock story and I look forward to reading yours too.

Cheers! 🍻

Needed a clock. Bought one for $25. Hilarious that it has a smoother “sweeping” seconds hand than any of my “timepieces”…and it has a thermometer. 💀

Great piece!

I have a Sterling & Noble as well. Can’t remember where I picked it up. I thought the day complication was pretty cool. The tiny divets in the middle of each day is the mark for AM or PM

That has to have a special movement, since all indicators emanate from the same post. I'm guessing the day hand is a slow mover, versus jumping over the AM/PM marker, correct? It creeps along?

Beautiful, congratulations!!

That’s exactly right.

Brilliant! Looks really nice the finished result. Next, you just gotta get yourself a bird clock.

Thank you! 🤝

Funny thing, I'm a birder anyway and have taken many pictures of them. Most I can identify by their sounds, so I can tell who's around when I'm walking through the woods:
