Q: How did you get into watch collecting?

I've always worn a watch - even as a young boy. But as an adult, I never thought much of it. Over the years I've accumulated a few and for some unknown reason I gained interest in 2019. I had no idea what to buy and started buying what I thought looked good and started to get a feel for brands and price and quality. I also started doing research. And here I am.

Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?

I don't recall exactly, but I do remember having a Timex in the 1970's as well as one of those early red LED watches in gold-tone.

Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?

Yeah. Our perpetually drunk neighbor gave my step-son a surprisingly nice Fossil dive-style watch - in new condition. I know it's just a quartz Fossil, but the thing has a day subdial, a date subdial and a 24-hour subdial, with a rotating bezel on a stainless case and bracelet. It has a solid feel and runs like a champ. Anyway, my step-son didn't wear a watch and asked me if I wanted it. Sure! Super solid beater watch that still looks great.

Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?

Use your own judgment regarding the level of quality you deem worthy of your dollar. I make it a game to try inexpensive watches that look good, then review them here.

Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?

Invicta. Some people see the outlandishly designed models and judge the company under the premise that any company that could produce such watches is not worthy of consideration *at all,* regardless of other models they produce that are *not* outlandish. That seems narrow-minded to me, especially considering that I have purchased their divers and have found them to be a great value for the money. The Pro Divers (200m WR) are a good value but the Grand Divers (300m WR) are another level of quality above the Pro Divers and are a fantastic value, because you can pick them up for about $100 (some even less!) and they're built like little bank vaults with Seiko movements! People seem to get the two styles confused and that's a shame because they're missing out on a good value.

Q: What is your grail watch and why?

This is an attainable "grail" - but listed as a grail nonetheless because I wouldn't normally spend this much on a watch - but the Cartier Rotonde Automatic Chronograph, with the white dial and blue hands. https://www.jomashop.com/cartier-watch-wsro0002.html
