2003 Daniel Roth Ellipsocurvex Moonphase

Daniel Roth is back making watches under his own name.

This is one of three DRs I’ve owned, a watch that bore his name released after he had already parted with owners Bvlgari.

Beautiful. I've gone down the Daniel Roth rabbit hole this year. Glad to see some appreciation for him on WC - didn't expect it!

I just won an auction for a Papillon.... I can't wait to receive it!!

What were the other two you owned?

I wandered in to DR a few years before the hype machine turned on. Back then it was possible to pick up a first gen BB2147 for US$5,000 at auction as the sole bidder no reserve. Five years later A Collected Man was selling one for US$85,000.

There were two tenth anniversary Papillons on Chrono24 going for US$21,000 just before the pandemic. One in white gold and the other in yellow gold. In 2021 one example was up on A Collected Man for US$42,000, followed a year later by another in the US$80,000s on the same platform. They've pulled back to the US$60,000s now I see. His new stuff is selling for six figure sums.

I had a 1995 small seconds from the first transition to ownership, and a 2002 big date from the second transition. Both were L series (meaning the mid-sized 34mm x 38mm) in 18K yellow gold.
