Buying Pre-Owned Watches

I have been in the pre-owned market for a while, looking for deals. After a few research (budget-mid range) watch prices are expected to go down in value about 10 to 30% it's original. That is, except for a few watches if the market are really looking for a specific model like SNKL23 and Casio Duro when they were temporarily discontinued (or out of stock).

But there's a "play" in the preowned budget-mid watch prices. By that, I mean some seller are more stingy others, even after some convincing from my part they just won't budge. Like that time I haggled a seller who sell his preowned Seiko SNK809 at retail price. I mean come on, at least give some discount. Other sellers are more willing to part with their watches for a lower price maybe because they really need the money or because they just want to get rid of the watch.

That's where I came in, I bought this Pagani Design - Daytona Homage at 50% it's original value. You can see at AliExpress, it comes at 90 USD and I bought it at 45 USD (equivalently, we trade using IDR). I was really lucky to get this deal. The seller is a collector, mostly seikos I think. He said he has been looking to sell this watch for over a year, and at that point I think he just want to get rid of it. I'll attach some pictures of the piece in this post, you can see it's in a pretty good condition, with some scratches on the bracelet.

So, what I'm trying to say is.. When you buy new, just think about the 'loss' you're willing to take when/if you fell out of love with your watch. Also, when looking at the preowned watches, start a conversation! Get to know the seller a bit and use that info to your advantage if you're haggling (like a cheapskate like me 😂).

PS:
>I'm sorry if this post offend you in some way (?) I just want to share my experience to the community 😉

>Also, preowned watch prices will be significantly affected by: (1) Watch condition; (2) Misc. items (manual book, box, warranty card); and (3) Time of usage/storage.

>What are your thoughts and experience in the preowned market? Feel free to share your views in the comment!

It's very hard to separate the used vs. new decision from the watch you are going to buy. For some models it makes sense, for others there is really no alternative, and there are segments of the market where I would be highly cautious for a number of reasons.

I'm sure that there are many good buys in the market segment you are looking into, because these are often the first watches people buy in their journey of collecting.

Everything is expensive currently.  Some of it is justifiable i.e. you pay more for labour and plant and the price of your product is high and you're producing more. But some of it isn't. People are paying more money for baubles because money is cheap. Money won't be cheap forever and bauble prices will fall.

Don't buy watches for financial reasons. Buy the watch you like and invest any money you have in productive enterprise.
