Memories of Austin Kaye?

When I used to commute into Charing Cross Station this second hand watch emporium was a magnet to me. I along with a least a couple of others would have our faces plastered to the window looking at the mainly Omegas and Rolex but with a good smattering of other brands. Ended up buying a 1960s seamaster and 1950s Zenith back in the noughties. Believe it closed around the start of the pandemic.

Never had a chance to visit this one. Sad to see these closing down (but we are to blame for not buying from them). I‘ve never been able to walk past H. Stain in Victoria without admiring their selection of watches and their 70’s/80’s signage!

I'd image the horrendous rent of a property in The Strand, and being a non essential retailer at the worst of the pandemic, did for them in the end...

Yeah definitely. It‘s got to be so hard for all jewellers at the minute. I dislike all watch retailers on social media telling me how everything is fine and the pandemic doesn’t really affect their business - its ok to admit things are difficult or challenging. There’s certainly no shame in it.

I was in St Albans recently and I was amazed that there was a camera shop on the high street!
