What’s A “Beater” Watch?

A beater watch is a term used to describe a durable and inexpensive timepiece that you don't mind subjecting to rough conditions. It's often worn during outdoor activities, sports, or any situation where there's a higher risk of damage to the watch. Beater watches typically prioritize functionality and toughness over luxury or aesthetic appeal. They are designed to withstand shocks, water exposure, and other forms of wear and tear. While they may not be as stylish or refined as high-end watches, beater watches serve their purpose by providing reliable timekeeping and resilience in demanding situations.

Post a photo of your most durable beater watch.

Like I’m talking the watch you’re grabbing when the zombie apocalypse hits you and you have 5 min to evacuate?!

This is my beater, Im wearing it today as I'm out on my motorbike later and the vibes could be detrimental to my Automatics. Generally wear this for any rough stuff, it's a quartz & really tough...I'm older (53) so don't do anything too extreme nowadays tho. 👴🏻😂

I would take the cost element out of the definition as we all have different views on what’s “inexpensive” or what’s cheap enough to risk in rougher activities.

For instance, I have a few G Shocks, but when I’m being outdoorsy I usually reach for my Vaer field watch. I paid about $400 for it, and for many people that’s too expensive to be rough with. Luckily for me, I feel I can afford it, and the watch has performed beautifully. I assume there are still people who wear Subs to work on the car and such. While I’m lucky enough to have $400 for a “beater”, I do not have $10k for one, but I bet there are those that do.

My favorite beater after a day at the beach.

I appreciate the share photo thekris!

And I respect your opinion on the cost element.

I mentioned “inexpensive” in my post as a point of relevance to the individuals buying power.

Weather I say it or not the fact of the matter will still remain that there will always be all walks of life and opinions to compound ideals on this forum.

Like… I personally can’t afford a Rolex Sub yet right, so if someone posts a reply “here is my beater Rolex sub ” and I get offended then well, that’s my problem not the guy who can afford it. And I’m not going to try and censor what I say and how I say it as long as I’m respectful always. We should all click into this application with a respect for one another’s style and buying power. I personally want to see a persons collection weather composed of all G shocks or all AP’s and both with will have the same level of respect from me.

Hope this reached you positively

Your point about the term “inexpensive” is fair, it does leave things open for the individual to determine what price range that means. And I totally agree, as long as we aren’t jerks to each other, I think discussions and disagreements are great. I know I’ve learned a lot and been shown other perspectives by a lot of people here.

That is lovely!

My Tag quartz is my beater, nowhere near Omega prices, but not cheap.

Why? Well for quite a while it was my only watch, so it soon got scratches from the sides of swimming pools. Then I got into collecting mechanicals. So the Tag became the beater, and it really makes sense since it's quartz. No worrying about the movement being too shaken up.

But the Omega quartz - kudos!

Thank you.

Funny story, I bought it cheap for my Dad for Xmas a few years ago, he wore it for a month then said he wanted to sell it because it was too expensive for him to wear - so I bought it back from him 😂😂

(But , bless him , he bought my Mrs a car with the money I gave him for the watch)

I'll never sell it, it's one of my favourite things.

Tag as a beater is very cool 😎, but why not, it's what they're designed for & at least we are getting our money's worth.

Cheers 🍻

Yea its funny how luxury watches are treated. Allot of what you pay for is a solid movement so even if it’s mechanical there not built to fall apart under harsh conditions especially a tool Watch. I hear of a lot of people who own a Rolex let’s say and they beat the crap out it for years and the watch doesn’t loose any time. Or a black bay owned by a gun enthusiast that has fired off over a million rounds wearing his watch for years and still holding up the same way it was purchased .

Your Tag is quartz so that even less parts which is good but even still they used hi quality parts I’m sure so you can go through any situation with it.

It's the bracelet that's really copped the scratches. The clasp looks like someone's taken a brillo pad to it! But I love seeing the dial catch the sun when I'm out cycling and it's great to use it as the sports watch it is.

Now my Pelagos... that's another matter!

Cheers friend 😁

I think that's great - and what a dad!

You've come up with a great solution to the problem of buying a hugely capable watch and then being ultra careful with it because it's so expensive. Buy an older quartz version as you did and then just not worry about it. 👌

I don't have one. I don't have a beater anything. My car is a 2006 Hyundai Elantra, named after St. Elantra, the patron saint of leaky automatic transmissions. It's my only car so it's all I drive. It has to do everything so I take special care of it. It would certainly qualify as a beater, it's starting to rust, and it's silver grey and looks like the zillion other Elantras of this vintage on the road.

When I was growing up, whenever he gave us kids something (including my first watch) my Dad would say "Take care of this. You kids could bust the cowboy hell out of anything."

But I don't like it when I ask a simple question and it gets overanalyzed. I'm guessing you don't either. But not only do I not recognize the category of beater watch, I don't have an everyday watch either, because I have 31 of them and who knows which one will get the call, unless it's a special event day. I can narrow it down to my orange Seiko SRPD59, which I wear a lot to keep it running. If I know it's going to be in a Dangerous Watch Situation, I take it off.
