My brand new Deida Sons watch! - Custom Watch Project

Hello fellow crunchers!

Today I am thrilled to show you my latest creation, a blue dial watch with a custom logo that says Deida Sons. This is a tribute to my family name and my love for watches. It’s one of two projects I’m working on with this logo and I hope to complete the other one soon. This watch is powered by a Seiko NH-35A movement, which is the automatic caliber of choice for diy projects since it is a reliable and “accurate” movement, affordable and easy to find parts to work on. It has a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and a power reserve of 41 hours. The movement also features a hand winding (self-explanatory) and a hacking function, which means the second hand stops when the crown is pulled out, allowing for precise time setting. The crown is a screw-down type, which provides a water-tight seal and protects the movement from dust and moisture. The dial is a stunning blue color that contrasts well with the golden hands, numbers and indices. The hands and indices are filled with white lume. The numbers at are Arabic numerals, which give the watch a classic and elegant look. The logo is printed on the dial in a bold font, adding a personal touch. The case is made of stainless steel and has a diameter of 40 mm. It has a sapphire crystal on both the front and the back, which protects the dial and the movement from scratches. The transparent caseback is so you can admire the movement and its rotor (thinking of swapping out the rotor for a more unique design, we'll see if actually do that). The bezel is a typical dive watch bezel, which has marks at 5-minute intervals with numbers at the 10-minute intervals ascending clockwise, and a marker to indicate zero, plus smaller dots to indicate the minutes in betwixt the numbers and markers. The bezel rotates counter clockwise and it matches the dial with a beautiful blue color. The watch is on a NATO strap that is blue and has a gray stripe down the middle. It is comfortable and durable, and easy to change and adjust. This is my third diy project and I learned a lot from it and I still need to fix a minor issue with the second hand, which sometimes gets stuck (I believe this is due to the watch stem being a hair too long and causing pressure on the inside of the movement since it only happens when the crown is screwed down). Or it might be due to a misalignment of the hands… I’ll have to go to a watchmaker and have him check my work and also calibrate my movement, since I don’t have a timegrapher on hand. I’m very proud of this watch and I hope you like it too. What do you think of my new watch and DIY watches in general?

I like the custom logo a lot. Sterile dials feel a little empty to me so the custom logo is a nice touch. The marbling on the dial is great as well. I haven't seen that dial yet. And colors scheme seems to pull together nicely. I'm not a fan of that handset for this watch, but it's not my wrist. Overall it looks fantastic!

Before you head to a watchmaker you might be able to troubleshoot that seconds hand yourself. It's likely just hanging up on something. Is it tilted back a little and perhaps brushing the inside of the crystal? Does it hang up in the same place each time, like over the top of the minutes hand? Perhaps there isn't quite enough clearance there. There will be people here with much more experience than me and better suggestions. But in my limited experience, a seconds hand that gets hung up isn't generally movement related. But if the crown stem is too long, why not just trim a little off?

Great watch! Enjoy!

Really like the marble dial and the logo! If possible, your logo etched into the rotor would be a nice touch. The other minor suggestion I have is to see if you can get the 12 o’clock hour digits to better match each other.

I think you might be right since the second froze up again while the crown wasn't screwed down and it is happening mostly when the minute hand is in the same area. I'll take it apart again and place the watch in another case (I did this when I first built the watch and there wasn't the issue since I was waiting for the glue on the stem and crown to finish drying. The movement I had in the watch while it was drying didn't have that issue so maybe something got pushed when swapping the internals.

That is a great idea! Thank you for the suggestion! Yes, I agree, the number 12 bothers me, but I got over it since it's my own design idea and I feel that the set backs and mistakes give it character.

Amazing idea, amazing colours, amazing watch!!! I just have a sense that a crystal without cyclops would work slightly better.

The next watch is a day date and won't have the cyclops. 💪🏽

It was definitely the second hand getting stuck on the crystal. Straightened it out a bit and now no more hiccups! Thanks for the advice. Cheers! 🍻
